  5. Characteristics of Living Things • All living things • Reproduce • Produce organisms that are similar to themselves • Sexual – 2 parents • Asexual – 1 parent

  6. Characteristics of Living Things • All living things • Perform certain chemical activities • Metabolism • Ingestion • Digestion • Respiration • Excretion

  7. Characteristics of Living Things • Needs of living things • Energy • Primary source is the sun • Energy is passed from sun to organism to organism

  8. Characteristics of Living Things • Food/ Water • Food supplies the materials and energy for life • Water dissolves nutrients for transport • Water allows for metabolic reactions • Water aids in ridding waste *You can go about a week without food but only a few days without water

  9. Characteristics of Living Things • Air • Most things get oxygen directly from air or air dissolved in water • Air supplies other essential materials for plants

  10. Characteristics of Living Things • Living space • Area must supply living thing with its needs If any of these requirements is missing , an organism will die.

Characteristics of Living Things • Proper Temperature • Metabolism can only occur at certain temperatures • Homeostasis: the ability to keep conditions inside the body constant • Warm blooded animals maintain constant body temperature • Cold blooded animals have body temperature that change with the environment If any of these requirements is missing , an organism will die.
