  1. The Respiratory System

  2. Respiration • What is respiration? • Why does our body need to respire?

  3. Oxygen Debt • Oxygen debt occurs when the body requires more oxygen than it can get. When the body works for a sustained period anerobically • The chart below is often seen and shows how the amount of oxygen used by the body changes over time. At the beginning the body works anaerobically leaving an oxygen deficit. Over time the oxygen consumption levels out to a steady state. After exercise the oxygen is pain back (oxygen debt). Notice the area of oxygen debt is greater than the area of oxygen deficit for the reasons stated above.

  4. The process of Respiration

  5. Tidal Volume and Vital Capacity • What is Tidal Volume? • What is Vital Capacity?

  6. Respiration and Exercise Immediate Effects 1. Breathing quickens 2. Breathing deepens 3. Oxygen debt The 400m running race is a great sporting example of the body going into oxygen debt on completion. Runners can be seen taking rapid deep breaths at the end of the race.

  7. Regular and Long Term Participation in PA • Increase efficiency of the lungs by: • Increased lung capacity • Increased Vital capacity • Increased number of Alveoli • Increased number of blood vessels

  8. Effects of Smoking/Nicotine on the Respiration system • Smoking primary impact is on the lungs. It damages the alveoli making them less stretchy, so smaller surface area during gaseous exchange and therefore less efficient .

  9. Homework • Read 129-147 • Complete worksheets, labeling muscles, identifying different types of muscles and examples of muscles • Ensure all vocab is up to date and compiled into ONE location. I WILL BE CHECKING NEXT WEEK!!!
