  1. Good Morning! Get to work SILENTLY and INDEPENDENTLY on your warm up. I should not see any backpacks on the floor/your lab table/behind you. THANKS!  Due to formative testing, your quiz has been bumped to Monday, 9/24. Happy Tuesday!

  2. Write this down on your guided notes! • LEQ #3 How do variations in air pressure cause different weather patterns to occur?

  3. Quick Review! • Air Pressure – The weight of the earth’s atmosphere pushing down on everything around it. Atmosphere Earth

  4. Quick Review – Chemical Composition of the Atmosphere • 78% Nitrogen • 21% Oxygen • 1% Argon & Carbon Dioxide

  5. Quick Review • Weather occurs in the TROPOSPHERE.

  6. So what is all this pressure business? • Soda can demonstration

  7. Conclusion  WHY did this happen? • Water inside the can was heated, turned to water vapor (gas.) All of the pressure was forced out of the can. • The pressure OUTSIDE the can was greater than the pressure INSIDE the can, causing it to implode.

  8. Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather • Air molecules are in constant motion and are affected by gravity. The force of this motion causes air pressure.

  9. Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather • High Pressure: Clear and dry conditions, usually sunny.

  10. Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather • Low Pressure: Causes storms, hurricanes and tornados.

  11. Think, Pair, Share • What type of weather system is over Charlotte today?

  12. Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather • When temperatures are HIGH, air pressure is usually LOW. Warm air is usually LESS dense than cool air.
