  2. Who were the leaders after Muhammad’s death? • 632 Muhammad dies but no successor named. • Abu Bakr – father-in-law and friend takes over. • One of first to convert and part of Mecca Clan in caravan trade

  3. First Caliph • Means Successor • Some clans abandon Islam, others refuse to pay taxes. • Abu uses military force to bring clans back in line with Islam. • Conquers Iraq and Syria
