  4. Types of Interactive Whiteboards • Electromagnetic • Resistive membrane • Laser Scanners

  5. Electromagnetic • Have hard surface, alike to traditional whiteboards and can be drawn on with normal pens. • To work as an interactive board, special battery-driven pens that emit an electromagnetic field detected by the board. back

  6. Resistive membrane • Soft, flexible surface, consisting of a touch-sensitive membrane. • Can be drawn on using fingers or a stylus. • Movement is detected by pressure on the board, which is tracked by coordinates on the computer. back

  7. Laser Scanners • Hard writing surface. • Infrared laser scans in top corners detect pen movement, position and colour. • Requires special felt pens that have uniquely coded reflective collars for laser detection.

  8. Implications for teaching and learning • Advantages • Disadvantages

Advantages • Whiteboards are interactive and promote active student engagement for children of all cognitive levels. • Promotes motivation. • Saves floor space (ceiling mounted projector, minimal cables and no need for reorientation as with overhead projectors). • Teachers and students can edit and add to what is already on the whiteboard. • Teachers have found that technological innovations can help level the playing field for special needs students and enable these students to achieve some success in the regular classroom (Lewis & Harrison, 1988. in Salinitri. G, Smith. K, and Clovis. C, 2002). • All the information and notes on the whiteboard can be saved and printed for students to avoid copious note-taking and encourage class particpation. • Teachers can present the lessons using text, sound, video, DVDs, CD-ROMs and/or television. and Internet links.

  10. Disadvantages • Highly expensive to purchase. • Extra personal development and training for teachers (time and money costs). • The surface can become damaged more easily than a normal whiteboard, this can cause expensive replacement.

  11. Curl Curl North Primary School • The school was introduced to SMART boards in 2005 when they borrowed one for a short period of time. By February 2006, the school had installed four SMART boards. In July, another four were installed. • The benefits were noticed immediately.

  12. Benefits • The students are engaged, finding the boards exciting and empowering. They become more involved, especially students who find working with computer technologies easier that pencil and paper. • Teachers find it easier to specifically plan lesson. • Teachers can use the board as an assessment tool as work done on the board is recorded.

  13. Summary • Interactive Whiteboards enables students to interact in a social environment with computer technologies. • It also enables teachers to record work completed in a whole class group session for assessment. • The whiteboards, although expensive to purchase, can be beneficial for classrooms and allow greater participation by all students.
