  2. Audience • Elementary students in grades 2 through 4 • Students who are interested in dogs • Students who own a dog and want to learn more about it and the proper ways to care for it.

  3. Environment • Students will be working as individuals or as partners • In a computer lab (partners will share a computer) • Helpers will be walking around for any questions • Students with learning disabilities would have an aid or parent going through the power point with them.

  4. Objectives Breedsof Dogs • Students will learn five of the different breeds of dogs and how they differ from one another. They will learn what different dogs look like and the different characteristics they have. By the end of this the student should have a 100% accuracy on the breeds.

  5. Objectives Dog Training • In this section, students will learn how dog trainers actually train dogs and the different tricks that dogs can learn. By the end of this section the students should have a 100% accuracy on how to train their dog.

  6. Objectives Caringfor a dog • Students will learn the proper way to care for a dog. After reviewing this section they will know the certain things dogs need and don’t need. They will also know how often they need to groom their dog. At the end of this section, students should have a 100% accuracy on how to care for a dog.

  28. Training Your Dog! Come! Heel! Sit! Stay! Roll Over!

  29. COME! • Make sure you have treats! • Call for the dog in a high-pitched voice • Give the dog a treat • Repeat this process daily in five minute sessions • Start off by calling for the dog in the house and slowly make your way outside

  30. SIT! • Hold treat near the dogs nose • Slowly move the treat over dog’s head toward tail • Say dog’s name and say “Sit!” • Keep Treat at nose level • Say “good” as soon as dog sits • Repeat

  31. ROLL OVER! • Say “down” while holding a treat (give treat) • Say “over” or “play dead” (gently push dog’s shoulder over so he/she falls over, give treat) • Say “roll over” (push dog onto back and roll them the rest of the way) • Repeat these steps everyday for at least 5 minutes

  32. HEEL! • Have dog on your left side, facing the same way as you • Hold treat in front of dog’s nose • Say “heel” while taking steps with treat in front of you (will take many attempts until dog pays attention • Say “good” when dog does it and give he/she treat • Train for 5 minutes everyday

  33. STAY! • Have dog sit or lay by you • Place hand (palm open) in front of dog’s face and say “stay” • Say “good” and give treat (if dog listens) • Do this in 5 minute training sessions
