A Theory of Change (ToC) • Creates a commonly understood vision of the long-term goals, how they will be reached, and what will be used to measure progress along the way • Is developed through a repetitive process • Engages stakeholders • Is built on data and validated assumptions Module 1, Unit 3, Session 12

Scoring your Draft Theory of Change Review the Theory of Change that you have drafted earlier and highlight areas where you feel data is missing or where assumptions may yet need further validation. Where do you think your Theory of Change is weak? Try to take the information that you have and put it into the following formula. Remember start at the right and work left.

  16. Pair Up! Share the Theory of Change (ToC) from your application and the results of the individual exercise with your partner. Using the scoring sheet, each partner should score the others' ToC. Assignment: Draft Theory of Change Narrative (30 Points) • Using your organizational draft Theory of Change that was originally completed during the application stage, you revise and score based upon the handout provided by the Regional Pride Program Manager. 2. Using the template provided by your instructor you write a narrative paragraph 100 – 150 Words to complete your Draft Theory of Change based upon your latest revisions. The narrative paragraph articulates your proposed Pride campaign strategy. It will explain how you change behaviors of key groups to reduce threats to the biodiversity target in your site.

Using the handout you review your draft Theory of Change to ensure that it meets the following criteria: • identifies the conservation result (CR) and conservation target in your site that your campaign will focus on; • identifies the principal threat(s) (TR) to this conservation target; • identifies the behavior change (BC) needed to reduce the threat; • proposes or presents alternate behaviors and the barriers that might prevent the target audiences from adopting them; • identifies barrier removal (BR) tools that exist and who might provide them; • identifies the type of interpersonal communication (IC) your Pride campaign will need to generate to help the target group change their behavior; • identifies the knowledge (K) and attitudes (A) needed for these discussions to take place. 4. Please include a statement articulating why you believe this campaign strategy will be effective, how it fits into your Lead Agencies larger strategic plan, citing proof of concept for this type of Theory of Change at other sites, case studies, or analogous situations. Example of Narrative Narrative Summary To eliminate the principal threat posed to the endemic and endangered Andrea Quail Dove, invasive rodents must be eradicated from Serena Island and their re-invasion prevented. Key target groups (Fishermen and Recreational Visitors) will be informed of the biodiversity value of the island, the threats posed by rodents, and the benefits of eradication. They will be asked to petition the government to approve an eradication program and to modify their behaviors to ensure re-invasion does not occur. There will be 100% compliance in adopting rodent monitoring and trapping strategies on their boats prior to their using the island. The Serena Pride Campaign will be deemed successful if rodents are eradicated from the island, re-invasion has not taken place, and if the population of endemic Andrea Quail Doves rebounds from 100 birds in 2007 to 250 by 2010. 137 Words
