  1. Effective Communication On your paper your , write about a time when you got into a fight because of a miscommunication.

  2. Today’s objectives • Identify the difference between communication and effective communication. • List the forms of nonverbal communication. • Demonstrate effective communication in groups with an activity.

  3. What is communication? • Communication is the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another. It involves a sender transmitting an idea to a receiver

  4. Activity! See it, say it, draw it!

  5. Now, what is EFFECTIVE Communication? • Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit.

  6. Nonverbal Communication • Eye Contact • Facial expressions • Posture • Body language • Vocal Tone • Volume • Personal Space

  7. When is this useful?? • “Assess job candidates based on their nonverbal communication. You can read volumes from how the applicant sits in the lobby. • The nonverbal communication during an interview should also elucidate the candidate’s skills, strengths, weaknesses, and concerns for you.”

  8. When else is this useful?? • When leading a meeting, speaking to a group, or talking with peers recognize that nonverbal cues can tell you: --when you’ve talked long enough, --when someone else wants to speak, and --the mood of the crowd and their reaction to your remarks. • Listen to their nonverbal feedback and you’ll be a better leader and speaker.

  10. Activity! • Break into groups of 3- 4. • Determine who wants to be blindfolded. • Determine who wants to speak. • Determine who wants to give directions (2 people can do this).
