  1. Design Test Integration and packaging of mems/moems Mems world markets : the case of the start-up. Jean-Christophe ELOY. May 2000. 45 rue Sainte Geneviève Tel : +33 472 83 01 80 69006 LYON Fax : +33 472 83 01 83 France eloy@yole.fr

  2. Focus of the analysis on the start-up Identification of the start-ups Identify in France all the start-up involved in the semi-conductor and Mems field Understand the position in the field and the way these companies have been created Analyse the way these companies are managing their growth Show the key elements of the growth management in these companies Interact with them in order to establish comparison and « standard » profils

  3. Information sources Analysis of all the start-up since 1990 in the following countries : France (in collaboration with CEA/BEM) Step by step in all the European countries Analysis on a growth management criteria Interviews of more than 100 companies

  4. Increasing creation rate in France

  5. Start-up creation is not a nationwide game

  6. Sales Time Generic growth models Dead born Still alive Sales Sales Time Time Numerous applications Key account management Internet model Sales Sales Time Time

  7. Learning curve of the Mems industry

  8. 2002 world microsystems market : 38.3 B $, 7 B units Source : Nexus.

  9. Examples of start-up in Moems in Europe Many MOEMS companies have been created for the past two years in Europe : Ionas (DK), Kymata (UK), Optocom (F), Teem Photonics (F), MOD (UK) … The areas addressed are very large : Pure Moems foundries Dedicated products like add-drop, cross connect, switch, fiber alignment part … These markets were underestimated during the Nexus survey as key applications.

  10. Examples of start-up in micro-fluidic in Europe Since one year, very strong mouvement of creation in the field of microfluidic devices : Sotec (CH), Diagnoswiss (CH), Thorion Diagnostic (DK), Chempak (DK), Seyonic (CH), Osmooze (F) … The applications addressed are very different : Point of care testing DNA chip Fluid management …

  11. Conclusions The markets of microsystems are more fragmented than the semiconductor markets Small companies can addressed world markets with an important market share The « CMOS like » process in the Mems field has up to now not been created The rate of creation in the mems field is increasing very rapidly More than 35 identified start-up projects in Europe only for Q1 this year Large amount of very innovative companies in Moems, RF devices, microfluidics …
