  2. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT • Do not unplug equipment by pulling on the electrical cord. Grasp the plug at the outlet and remove it. • Do not stretch electrical cords across an aisle where someone might trip over them. • Do not overload extension cords. • Do not attempt to remove the cover of equipment for any reason while the power is on.

  3. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT • Avoid food or beverages near equipment, where a spill might result in an electrical short circuit. (Also damages the computer keyboard)

  4. COMPUTERS • The keyboard should be directly in front of the user. • The user’s elbows should be bent at a 90° angle. • The back of the keyboard should be slightly elevated to allow the user’s wrists to be in a neutral position. • Feet should be flat on the floor, allowing the user to sit up straight

  5. COMPUTERS • A badly positioned computer not only makes the user unproductive, it also causes discomfort. • If the monitor is badly positioned the user will probably suffer eyestrain, headaches, stiff neck and shoulders, and backache.

  6. CHAIRS AND DESKS • If your desk is too high, compensate by raising the seat height of your chair. • Never stand on the chair to reach anything, particular if the chair has wheels or is of the swivel kind. • Do not lean too far in any direction, to avoid tipping over in a chair. • Set adjustable chairs for personal comfort and back support.

  7. STACKING AND STORAGE • Light objects stored on top and heavy objects in the bottom - also in filing cabinets. • Boxes, files and other heavy articles must not be stacked on top of cabinets, cupboards or window sills. • Keep passages clear.

  8. FILING CABINETS • Close the drawers! • Don’t open all the drawers at the same time • Use the handle to close the drawer. • Never reach blindly into a drawer. • To avoid tipping a filing cabinet over, fill the drawers starting at the bottom with the heavier materials.

  9. SURFACES • Store scissors, sharpened pencils, and other sharp instruments with the sharp points downward. • Use a staple remover rather than a fingernail. • Do not examine a jammed stapler by holding it near your eyes or testing it over your finger.

  10. OFFICE MACHINES • Learn how to operate them safely before you use them. • Loose clothing, jewelry, long flowing hair to be kept out of machines. • Keep hands and fingers clear of paper inlet at the shredder. • Switch the machine off before trying to clear a blockage.

  11. EMERGENCY PROCUDURES • Learn the location of the nearest fire exit and fire extinguisher. • Learn the emergency evacuation procedures and follow them precisely. • Learn the procedures for bad weather and follow them precisely. • Never ignore a fire alarm or other evacuation alarm.

  12. WORKING ALONE AFTER HOURS • Always work near a phone. • Lock all doors to your work area. Do not leave doors open for anyone. • Do not use an elevator if anyone suspicious is in it. Stand next to the control buttons. • Park near the building entrance and near a light. • Check the parking lot visually before leaving the security of the building. • Keep car keys in your hand ready to use.
