  6. Societies that do not rely on women’s contributions tend to lack female singing • Motherly groups focus on rhythmic beats • Soothing heart beat • Painful stimuli (blinding, shaping of feet, head, ears, limbs, inoculation, circumcision, etc.) cause broad tonal changes

  7. Societies that emphasize obedience=cohesive singing is dominant • Repressed singing • Voices are more raspy • Societies that allow individualism=more individualistic in musical expression • Sexual restrictiveness=sounds of anxiety, pain, deprivation, sorrow
