  2. Where is Sochi and how it was selected ? • Sochi is a resorted city in Russia • Sochi secured 5l of votes from the International Olympic Committee by beating out their rivals South Korea • Sochi had 51 votes, South Korea had 47 votes and Austria had 25 votes

  3. The dates for the Winter Olympics • Starts Friday Feb 7th – Sunday Feb 23rd

  4. Preparations for the Winter Olympics • February 7ththe Olympic Cauldron will be lit in Fisht Stadium located in Sochi • Preparations will cost about $18-24.5 billion • Russia is starting to build the sporting facilities for the sport venues and the games are still on schedule

  5. Sporting events at the Olympics • Biathlon- single competition or relay team races. • Bobsleigh- Teams of two sledding down a narrow slide with a gravity powered sled.

  6. Curling- a game where a heavy stone slides across the ice with a stick that looks like a broom. • Ice Hockey- competitive tournament and the players skate on a rink for three periods of twenty minutes.

  7. Luge- Two people go on one sled and slide down a snowy hill or track. • Nordiccombined- Is a combination of cross country skiing and ski jumping.

  8. Skating- Traveling in a certain distance, but at different speeds. • Skeleton-One person on a sled slides down a frozen track while laying down.

  9. Skiing-Going down a snowy hill and jumping to see how far they land for points. • Snowboarding- A sport which uses one big ski to glide over snow. The snow boarder who does the best tricks wins the tournament.

How is Russia keeping the games safe? • Tens of thousands Russian troops, police officers and private guards will be security at every sport venue. • Russian troops are conducting training practices on how to responded to terror attacks or threats. • Designated lanes for ambulances so Russia is trying to remove parking lots.

Controversies at Olympics • Economy- Pricing out propriety of land in Sochi to be able to build more sporting facilities for the sporting competition. • Russian business owners of Sochi are spending about eighteen to twenty four billion just to have the Winter Olympics hosted in Russia plus their spending money to purchase land. They also have to pay the employees to work during the Olympics.

Environmental- When building or constructing for the Winter Olympics Russian workers have been polluting the air with their automobiles that leaks out gas into the air. • Russian construction workers also have been knocking down trees and digging up deserted land propriety to build facilities for the Olympics.

  13. Competitions most anticipated to watch • Figure skating- People love to see athleticism of doing jumps, spins or couples routines. • Speed skating- Fans love to see how fast the skaters skate at a certain distance.

  14. Ice Hockey- Fast pace game that has tackling or fist fighting that brings excitement to people. • Skeleton- Navigating a sled down a steep hill that gets people interested to see how its played.
