  2. A. England • Main Idea: Conflict arose in England as a result of the growth of the royal power

  3. A. England • Henry II, Common Law, and Conflicts with the Church • King Henry II of England, who ruled from 1154 to 1189, became one of the most powerful European. monarchs • He controlled England and half of what is present day France. • And King Henry set up a whole lot of laws for England.

  4. A. England • King John, the Magna Carta, and Parliament • King John was the youngest son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. • He ruled from 1199 to 1216 • John in sited that as king , he had the power to do whatever he wished.

  5. B: France • Main idea: The Captains Dynasty in France succeeded in laying the foundations for a nation state.

  6. B: France • The Captains • Hugh Capet laid then foundations of the French monarchy . His line called the Captain Dynasty ,lasted for more than 300 years. • Hugh eldest son was selected as the next king of France. • Two strong later Captain monarch s were Philip II Augustus and Louis IX . Both monarchs enjoyed long reigns.

B: France • The Hundred Years War • In 1337, England invaded Normandy in France , which caused the beginning of the hundred Years War. • A large powerful French army was defeated by a small English army. • As a result of the war , France assumed much of the same territory that it occupies today as a nation.

  8. C: The Holy Roman Empire and Spain • Main idea: Alliances and conflicts united and divided Europe, and Christians succeeded in regaining control of Spain from the Muslims.

C: The Holy Roman Empire and Spain • The Holy Roman Empire • Charlemagne's empire continued in various forms for centuries after his death in 814. • In 962 ,the German King Otto I was crowned emperor by Pope John XII. • Nationalism was slower to develop in Germany and the Holy Roman Empire than in other parts of western Europe.

C: The Holy Roman Empire and Spain • Christians Reconquer Spain • By the mid -1260s, many cities Southern had been reclaimed by the christens, including Cordoba Cadiz, and the Muslim capital of Seville. • It took the Christians until 1492, however, to capture the Muslim stronghold of Granada. • In that same year Ferdinand and Isabella expelled the Jewish people from Spain.

  11. Monarch • Which means a great leader of a group of man.

  12. Nationalism • Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination.
