  2. Historical Overview • Called the Fertile Crescent due to its shape. Known also as Mesopotamia. • 1st major world civilization. • Judaism, Christianity, and Islam began in SW Asia. • Arabs conquered most of region since 8th century. • European powers had influence after WWI and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. • After WWII, Jewish state of Israel was created. • Western style of government vs. traditional Islamic style still a factor of conflict today.

  3. Physical Features • Mountains in Iran, Turkey. • Deserts dominate rest of region except fertile valleys near rivers. • Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Strait of Hormuz

  4. Climates • Dominated by arid and Semi-arid climates. • Mediterranean along the coastlines.

  5. Ecosystems • Chaparral along coastlines. • Deserts dominate Arabian Peninsula. • Dry, temperate grasslands in the rest of the region.

  6. Economic Activities • Oil and natural gas extraction. • Nomadic herding, commercial farming near water. • Hydroelectric power.

  7. People • Mostly Arab; Islamic. • Live near water source. • Many nations have lots of oil money, but their people remain poor.
