Overview of the Digestive System • GI/Digestive System digests food and transports nutrients into the blood • Breaks down food chemically and mechanically to promote absorption through the digestive tract wall (epithelium) and into the blood or lymph • Proteins, lipids and carbs must be digested to be absorbed • Vitamins and minerals can be absorbed directly into the body from the digestive system • Both secretions and muscular action of the digestive system are needed

Overview of the Digestive System • Hunger and satiety controlled by hormones and other chemicals that affect the hypothalamus control centre for ingestion • Social factors and availability • Digestive system consists: of two components: • The Alimentary canal • Accessory organs • Food is ingested  processed in the digestive tract→ undigested food leaves the system as feces
