  1. CRPDE:E = Evolution Alicia J. Knoedler Center for Research Program Development and Enrichment 3rd Annual Conversation on the State of Norman Campus Research September 17, 2012

  2. Center for Research Program Development and Enrichment The mission of the Center for Research Program Development and Enrichment is to assist in the development of strong and competitive programs for research, scholarship and creative activities across the University of Oklahoma by supporting faculty and students in these efforts.

  3. The Basics – CRPDE Staff

  4. The Basics – CRPDE Location • On the University Research Campus • Until October 12, 3 Partners Place Building, Suite 210 • As of October 15, 4 Partners Place Building, Suite 1120 (just East of 3 Partners Place) CRPDE

  5. How do we spend our time? • Communicating information about research at OU to the faculty and students. • Consulting, giving advice, and answering questions about a large number of topics concerning research, funding, and resources • Reading, editing, and commenting on internal and external funding proposals • Organizing proposal development for collaborative and complex projects • Planning and giving workshops and other training sessions • Attending department and college meetings to discuss research • Searching for funding opportunities for faculty and students • Interpreting internal and external funding guidelines and solicitations for funding • Creating new research resources • Working with the VPR, his staff, advisory committee, the Research Liaisons, the Research Council, the Research Cabinet, Office of Research Services, etc.

  6. Did you know that CRPDE will… • Read your proposals for funding and give you substantive comments? • Read and comment on proposals for internal funding? • Provide assistance through the development of your individual OR large collaborative proposal? • Search for funding opportunities and teach you how to search for them effectively on your own? • Help faculty, postdocs AND graduate students with pursuit of funding? • Help you think creatively about so many things related to research, scholarship and creative activity?

  7. CRPDE Initiatives in 2012-2013 • Continue to coordinate the development of several significant proposals, including NSF programs (PFI, I-Corps, MRIs, IGERT, and STEM initiatives) and complex funding initiatives • Offering Graduate Grant Writing Workshops in Fall, 2012 (crpde.ou.edu/workshops) • Seeking input on topics for workshops in Spring, 2013 (email crpde@ou.edu with suggestions) • Planning to host a research related symposium with Minority Serving Institutions in early spring, 2013 • Building resources related to broadening participation of underrepresented groups, STEM Education and Research, and Arts and Humanities. • Working with Colleges of Education and International Studies to provide more specific research assistance

  8. Two Example Initiatives • Oklahoma Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) - NSF • Examining several data sets regarding research engagement.

  9. Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR • A state is eligible to participate in the NSF EPSCoRProgram if their most recent 3-year level of NSF research support is equal to or less than 0.75% • Oklahoma has received 0.42% of the total of NSF’s funding (over the past 3 years) • California = 12.64% • New York = 5.82% • Massachusetts = 5.56% • Virginia = 5.4% • Colorado = 5%

  10. EPSCoR States

  11. Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR • Since 2008, NSF has helped Oklahoma build research capacity and capabilities related to bioenergy and biofuels (www.okepscor.org) • Currently, we are submitting a new proposal to NSF to build research capacity and capabilities related to climate variability. • Proposal is due October 3, 2012 • $20M for research infrastructure, personnel, student and program support statewide • Notification of proposal outcome will occur in Spring, 2013

  12. Research Engagement • We have many questions… • Where does OU have strength in research, scholarship, creative activity? • What resources are needed to enhance existing strengths or build new strengths? • What are the challenges we have that limit our competitiveness? • Who is interested and what do they need? • Why does all of this matter?

  13. Research Engagement • Kelvin showed information on external funding success rates. • We are also considering how many women at OU engage in research through measures of external funding • 10 Year Data Set • Considered Female Faculty in a position as PI and/or as Co-PI • Example Findings so far: • The number of unique female PIs is increasing at a rate more than twice that of male PIs • The number of male lead PIs is trending downward while the number of lead female PIs is trending upward • 2011 represents a ten-year high of the proportion of female faculty with new awards to male faculty with new awards

  14. Research Engagement • Across the 10 years considered: • 2 female PIs have had continuous funding • 12 female PIs have had continuous funding for 8 or 9 of those 10 years • 10 female PIs have had continuous funding for N-1 of their years at OU • Still need to consider trends across male PIs • Also looking in to national trends

  15. Engaging Research Resources • Encourage faculty, postdocs, and graduate students to seek assistance from CRPDE, OVPR, CARD • Invite CRPDE staff to talk to departments about internal funding programs or about engaging in research, utilizing resources • We are working to improve our knowledge of Broader Impacts activities statewide • CRPDE is working to increase the number of real relationships and collaborations with minority-serving and regional institutions • Being bold, having bold ideas, doing more requires greater assistance – faculty need to ask for help

  16. CRPDE – Horrible Acronym or Unique? • Center for Research Program Development and Enrichment • Unique and International • Centre de Recherche en Psychologie du Développement et de l'Education at AIX-Marseille University • crpde@ou.eduhttp://crpde.ou.edu
