  1. Implementing LAMS to improve teaching and learning Prof. James Dalziel Howard Noble

  2. Your experiences of good learning • Sitting by yourself with just a book or even worse some online content? • Sitting in a lecture theatre desperately trying to scribble down notes?

  3. What is Learning Design? • The main goal of the learning design specification is to acknowledge learning theories that have been developed by lengthy and detailed studies e.g.: • L. Vygotsky and Social Development Theory • J. Bruner and Constructivist Theory • J. Lave and Situated Learning • E. de Bono and Lateral Thinking • To state boldly that e-Learning should be about: • Groups of people doing activities in environments • Where an environment is a physical or virtual space where learners are provided with tools, services and resources

  4. Learning design, learning objects and assets • We can think in terms of compiling three classes of objects: • Assets such as pictures, video and graphs • These are pieces of content that do not have a specific pedagogical purpose • Learning Objects: • Discrete pieces of content with well defined learning outcomes. • Learning Designs: • Sequences of activities to be performed by groups of individuals who take on defined roles and work within a defined environment

  5. Roles in the creation of these objects • Creators of assets: how can I capture and store high quality images, video and text • http://www.mic.ki.se/MEDIMAGES.html#AnatomyandOrthopedics • http://www.ama-assn.org/ama1/pub/upload/images/446/skeletonatlas.jpg • Creators of learning objects: how can I collate assets to describe a specific area of a curriculum. How can I do this in a way that the content can be easily re-purposed for a different educational context • http://www.unl.ac.uk/ltri/learningobjects/examples.htm • http://www.ratlife.org/Home/0Main-frameset/Mainframeset.htm • Creators of learning designs: what activities shall a group of learners do. What roles do learners need to adopt and how to create the environments needed to support an activity • Next page…

  6. The goals of this workshop • To ask you to think of e-learning in terms of: • Groupings of learners • Who take on different roles • To complete activities • Within both online and offline environments • Where they are assured access to the best resources/ tools/ services • To discourage you in thinking that e-learning is just about creating text and pictures • To hear your thoughts on how you think the Learning Design specification and LAMS should be developed for the future
