  2. About Mrs. Lounder • Graduate of Chartiers-Houston Jr./Sr. High School, Allegheny College, and the University of Pittsburgh • 7th year at Trinity Middle School • Two young sons, Samuel and Elijah

  3. About Mr. Miles • Graduated from Butler High School (a long time ago) and Kutztown State University (also a long time ago) • Have been teaching at Trinity for more than 25 years • My goal is to provide additional support for those students who need assistance

  5. Weekly lesson plans can be found on Edline and my website! Essential questions are used to help students understand the focus and purpose of our studies.

  6. English 8/Pre-AP Objectives • Students will use the writing process to create narrative, persuasive, and informational essays. • Students will utilize organizational structures and techniques and incorporate text-based support when appropriate. • Students leaving this class will understand how to incorporate writing into both future academic endeavors and life in general. 

  7. English 8/Pre-AP Objectives • Students will gain increased knowledge of our language through reading, writing, and vocabulary enrichment exercises, thus improving both reading comprehension and writing skills. • Students will understand the structure and function of the parts of the sentence, the different parts of speech, and punctuation. • Students will leave this class with the understanding that proper grammar usage is necessary to ensure that a written work communicates clearly.  

  8. English 8/Pre-AP Objectives • Students will read, evaluate, and discuss both fiction and non-fiction, including novels, short stories, poems, and plays. • Students will complete a persuasive research project and present the results to the class in the form of a formal persuasive speech. • Students will read and discuss Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, making extensions to related ideas and topics. Students will understand the historical context and significance of the Holocaust. • Students will complete two TASD Writing Assessments (PROMPT).

  9. What does this mean? • We work hard in English class. • Students almost always have English homework! • I have high expectations for my students regarding both behavior and academics. • Students in my classes are given every opportunity to learn. • I am always here to help.

Pennsylvania State Standards and Anchors and PSSA Testing • Our curriculum is aligned to both the state standards and assessment anchors, ensuring that students leave here with the knowledge necessary to succeed! • Some of the standards and anchors addressed each week appear at the top of all of my lesson plans. • PSSA testing typically takes place in March and April. • 8th grade students take the reading, math, writing, and science tests. • Students essays are evaluated using either the General Scoring Guidelines for Open-Ended Reading Items or the Pennsylvania Writing Assessment Domain Scoring Guide. These rubrics are the same ones used by the PSSA evaluators! • We work hard to prepare students for these tests, but our primary goal is to prepare students to be positive, contributing members of society and lifelong learners!

Pre-AP English • Third year of program at Trinity Middle School • Designed to challenge motivated students • Utilizes concepts and assessment methods recommended by the College Board • Increased responsibility for independent reading and coursework outside of class • Rigorous focus on informational and persuasive writing • Emphasis on analyzing literature, classroom discussion, and group work • Provides students with an intellectually stimulating classroom environment • Prepares students for success in advanced high school courses.
