  1. LOTEHAT 2 ProjectInvestigation Showcase 2012 Name: Toshiko Kamei School Name: Marist-Sion College Investigation Title: Using iPads and iPods in the classroom to increase student engagement.

  2. What I did: • I presented two year 7 classes with a pre-survey, asking them how they felt about Japanese and what ICT devices they liked to use in the classroom. • The students prepared a speaking assignment. • They had two classes with an iPod each in order to record the speaking assignments in Morpho and Puppet Pals HD. • We also practiced writing Hiragana and Kanji using Zen Brush. • We did Hiragana review, using Make Dice Lite. • We also did sentence structures review, using Socrative. • I then presented the students with a post-survey, asking similar questions to the ones in the pre-survey.

  3. What I learnt: • The simpler the app, the better it is to use. • Extra entertaining features to make an app more exciting and fun just distracted from the assignment. • Variety is good to engage students.

  4. Where to from here: • Continue to explore different apps available on the iPad and iPods. • Use the iPads and iPods with different age groups. • Continue to be a part of online communities that share ideas on effective use of different apps. • Increase the number of types of activities the students use to apply their language skills.
