  1. LOTEHAT 2 ProjectInvestigation Showcase 2012 Name: JoonChee Tan School Name: Our Lady of Sion College Investigation Title: Assessing speaking development using the IPAD APP “Explain Everything ”

  2. What I did: • The class was divided randomly into two equal groups of students. One group had accessed to the pre-recorded passage read by a native Mandarin speaker with the correct pronunciation created using the “Explain Everything” IPAD APP. The other group of students did not have this IPAD APP • Pre and Post Assessments were made on both groups of students by recording and rating each of their speaking skill (fluency and pronunciation) using a rubric scale • The Pre and the Post Assessments data were compared to see whether there is an advantage of the use of an IPAD APP

  3. WHAT I LEARNT: Assessment of Fluency • Control Group – five out of eleven students (45%) had improved fluency • Experimental Group – four out of twelve students (33%) had improved fluency • Two students in each group were rated less fluent

  4. WHAT I LEARNT: Assessment of Pronunciation • Control Group – six out of eleven students (54%) had improved pronunciation • Experimental Group – nine out of twelve students (75%) had improved pronunciation • No student in the Experimental Group regressed whereas in the Control Group one student had regressed

  5. Conclusion Fluency • No advantage of using the IPAD APP to improve fluency Pronunciation • Clear advantage in pronunciation using the IPAD APP to practise pronunciation

  6. Where to from here: • I will continue to use the IPAD APP to help improve my students pronunciation • This method will become my routine teaching practice on speaking skill for all year level in my Chinese classes • For fluency improvement I will encourage the students to spend more time with the IPAD APP to see if extended period can help
