  6. Today I am learning… 6 • about the Multi-Genre Research Project because the more exposed I am to an array of writing, the better a writer I will become.

  7. Work Period: MGRP 7 • Overview: You will create a Multi-Genre Research Project as your unit project for Expository Writing. This will be counted as many grades and your Expository project grade so be sure to DO ALL OF YOUR BEST WORK possible.

  8. The Packet 8 • You have received a packet to guarantee your success on this ongoing project. Be sure to keep it in your binder at all times.

  9. What is a Multi-Genre Research Project? 9 • A multi-genre research project is a portfolio of your writing. • Each piece of writing will be of a different type (letter, essay, advertisement, etc.) but it is still an expression of Expository Writing. • You will have to do some research both in class (through notes and computer time) and outside of class in order to be successful with this project.

  10. The MGRP: Research 10 • Don’t worry, the outside research you will need to do must be in alignment with whatever you create, so you will not necessarily need access to a computer.

  11. Quick Quiz 11 • Do you need access to a computer to get an A on this project? • A. Yes • B. No

  12. Quick Quiz 12 • Do you need to hang on to your packet? • A. No, all the information can be memorized. • B. Yes, everything I need to be successful is in this packet.

  13. How to make your MGRP 13 Your Multi-Genre Research Project will be created by just you so you can add your flair. You will need to make the following according to the checklist:

  14. The Checklist 14 • Take a look at the checklist. You will need to make: • Cover Page (has your full name, class period, and project topic) • Table of Contents (lists each item and the page it appears upon) • Explanation essay (explains why you chose your topic in 5 or more paragraphs)

  15. The Checklist (continued) 15 • You will also need: • Genre piece #1 Rough Draft • Genre piece #1 (must be selected from the attached choice board and turned in) • Post-Note for genre piece #1(a paragraph, 5+ sentences, explaining why you chose this type of genre, what you had to do to research making this genre piece, what you learned from making this genre piece, and what you would change if you had to do this piece all over again) • You will make a total of 5 genre pieces and will have to include their rough drafts and a post-note for each of them.

  16. Quick Quiz 16 • Use your packet to help you answer this question: • How many genre pieces must be created in total? • A. 12 • B. 1 • C. 6 • D. 5

  17. Let’s look at a sample MGRP 17 • Ms. Williams made a Multi-Genre Research Project on examples of Peaceful Protest seen in the book The Hunger Games. • The book is about a sixteen-year-old girl who ends up having to risk her life to save her little sister...and she starts a revolution in the process.

  18. The Cover Page 18 • This cover page has a simple design with important information: • The topic (Peaceful Protest) • The author of the MGRP (Nadia P. WIlliams) • The class this is for (ENGL 7750) • The teacher of this class (Dr. Aaron Levy) Peaceful Protest as seen through The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins a Multi-Genre Research Project by Nadia P. Williams ENGL 7750 Fall 2010 Dr. Aaron Levy

  19. The Explanation Essay 19 • This essay explains why the author of this MGRP decided to create this and what they were hoping to find. • On the next slide, you will see an excerpt of this sample explanation essay.

  20. Explanation Essay Example 20 • Nadia P. Williams ENGL 7750 Dr. Levy Fall 2010 A title like The Hunger Games could put anyone off. Having glanced at this book at my school’s book fair at least once per visit, I was certainly intrigued, however the inside cover provided me with little motivation to read the book, let alone the subsequent titles. Three years after that first viewing, I was hooked, seeing what truly was so addictive about this title. The tale covers a variety of thematic elements such as love, poverty, the role of a teenager, the definition of family, humanity, among numerous others. I sought to explore the vein in which the book addresses peaceful protest as the acts seen as subversive were really expressions of love, respect, and honor which were characteristics of peaceful protest throughout the ages.

  21. Sample Genre Piece 21 • This was a meeting poster created as if it was something made by the characters in the book. • How is this poster expository?

  22. Quick Quiz 22 • What must you put after each genre piece? • A. a picture • B. a pre-note • C. a post-note • D. a Post brand Cereal

  23. Sample Post-Note 23 Post-Note: “Meeting of the Mines” Poster I found that as this poster took form, it was very evocative of a modern spin on old World War II-era propaganda posters. Its stark lines, bold colors, simple, sans-serif font really suggests the need to be straight to the point. As a brief side note, I did notice after the fact that the color choices I gravitated toward were those of the German flag. Perhaps subconsciously these colors stand for everything the Districts were fighting for. Given that the people in the Districts were working up to rebel against The Capitol which was the symbol of excess, shallowness, and superfluous frills within Panem while many starved. Such a no-frills subversive meeting would have to take place hidden completely or just hidden in plain sight in order to gain strength.

  24. Another Sample Genre Piece 24 • Here is a magazine article created on the topic of the MGRP (peaceful protest) as if it was written by someone in the book.

  25. Another Sample Post-Note 25 Post-Note: “Who is ‘The Girl on Fire” Article After creating this article, I considered changing it to have a more direct connection to the theme of peaceful protest. I sat on the idea of altering this for days upon days until finally I realized that it is sufficient. As is indicated in my pre-note, there is some mention of the poisonous berries which was considered by President Snow to be an act of rebellion. However, I feel this article really touches upon the ways in which information is passed along about the next notable person. Articles were written about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X, Mahatma Ghandi, and many others. As the saying goes, “all press is good press” and I tend to agree because whether positive or negative, the attention given to such persons only adds fuel to the fire of their cause, especially for those who seek to fully understand their cause.

  26. What do you think? 26 • Why do you think the post-note is necessary? • Discuss with your groups, then we will share as a class.

  27. Your MGRP 27 • Your Multi-Genre Research Project will be based on a topic of your choice. • You will also use the choice board at the back of your packet to decide what to create. • Remember, our focus is to explore Expository writing in our Multi-Genre Research Projects.

  28. What is Expository Writing? 28 • Expository writing is writing to inform. • Facts are the main focus. • How do you think we see expository in the real world?

  29. What is Expository Writing? 29 • There are four types of Expository Writing: • Explanation • Description • Problem and Solution • Comparison and Contrast

  30. Explanation 30 http://videos.howstuffworks.com/electronics/electronics-deconstructed-videos-playlist.htm#video-37738 Watch this video. First you will see persuasive commercials followed by an expository video. Now, share your thoughts with your group about how it differs from persuasive.

  32. Persuasive or Expository? 32 Michelle Obama speaks about Haiti: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6100152n Discuss your thoughts at your group. Defend your answer. A. Yes B. No

  33. Problem and Solution 33 With problem solution writing, you state the problem and identify a solution.

  34. Comparison and Contrast 34 In comparison and contrast writing, you identify how something is similar to and different from something else.

  35. What is Expository Writing? 35 This is an example of a business letter which is a form of Technical Writing. We will also be looking at Technical Writing in this Unit.

  36. What is Expository Writing? 36 What do you notice about this letter? How is it different from other letters you have seen? How could this letter also be expository writing?

  37. Closing 37 • Which genre are you? • Based on what you were shown in class today, which type of expository writing best fits with your personality? • Share your answer in a Rally Robin with your elbow partner.

  38. Homework 38 • You must tell 2 people what you learned about the Multi-Genre Research Project this weekend. • You must have them sign your agenda to receive credit. • Those who complete this task will receive bonus points on your first genre piece’s grade.
