  3. Matter • Matter is the “stuff” that everything is made of. • We call this “stuff” particles. • Particles are atoms & molecules • Atoms and • molecules make • up matter

  4. Mass • Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. • We use a balance to measure mass • Mass is measured in grams and kilograms units

  5. To Measure Mass Of an Object • Get a balance • Place an object on the balance • Add masses on the other side until balanced • This is the objects total mass

  6. Weight • Weight is the pull of gravity on an objects mass • We use a scale to measure weight • Weight is measured in pounds and ounces in the U.S. but kilograms and grams in metrics.

  7. To measure weight Take an object • Remember the amount • of matter in an object is • the mass • Gravity always pulls • down on objects, so • gravity pulls on mass

  8. Get a scale • Place the scale • between the center of • gravity and the object • The scale measures • the amount of gravitational pull as • “weight”
