Extent Poverty in India • India is a nation of over 300 million poor people, which is the worlds largest number of poor people. • Lack of food and water. • Poverty is increasing by 8 million a year. • 456 million live on less than $1.25 a day. • 41.6% of the total population falls below • the international poverty line.

  3. Life expectancy for male (60 years) • Life expectancy for women (50-55 years) • 31% of infants are born with low birth-weight • One out of two children between the ages of 6 and 14 has no access to primary education. • 500,000 children are forced into this commercial sex trade every year.

  4. Causes • High population growth rate • Illiteracy • Ignorance • Unemployment • Caste based politics • Discrimination • Large families

These are some of the Programs/strategies that have been put in place in an attempt to alleviate poverty • The targeted public distribution system (TPDS) • Training of Rural Youth for Self Employment (TRYSEM) • Development of Women and children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) • Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY)

  7. Work that needs to be further done to eliminate poverty • Shelter • Reasonable amount of food and water for each person • Doctors located close by to rural areas • Better facilities at school.
