  2. Focused Free Write Pre-Writing for the short story: “Charles” by Shirley Jackson To be able to fully appreciate our story, we need to be able to walk a mile in the protagonist's shoes.

  3. Each of the writing prompts below offer a situation real people have experienced in real life. After reviewing EACHscenario, choose ONE writing prompt on which to focus. Respond to the prompt by writing AT LEAST 10 SENTENCES in your journal. Edit your work for: Content (meaning) + Conventions (mechanics – Rinky Dink Errors)

  4. Describe a time when you told a “white lie”. • What was the situation? What was the outcome • of telling your “white lie”? EXPLAIN using • specific detail. • Describe a time when there was a surprise • outcome to a situation you were involved in. • What was the situation? Describe the outcome • and how it was a surprise. Inside/ Outside Circle • Fill out an index card with the following information about yourself: • full name • favorite extracurricular activities • greatest accomplishment in life • most memorable event in your life • Find a partner to work with. • Form an inside circle, as well as an outside circle with partners FACING each other.

Fishbowl Discussion • ALL CLASS MEMBERS MUST BE LISTENING TO EACH OTHER ACTIVELY AT ALL TIMES—OR the activity will end. • The SEVEN STUDENTS at the CENTER of the circle are having a FOCUSED DISCUSSIONABOUT THE TOPIC AT HAND. • The rest of the students in the outside “U” are expected to be ACTIVELY LISTENING for the opportunity that they can “tap” in.

Fishbowl Discussion 4.ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO “TAP IN”AT LEAST ONCE FOR A FULL CLASSWORK GRADE. • HINT: If you are in the outside “U” you should be writing down your thoughts to add to the discussion, so that you don’t forget what you want to say. 5.As stated in the student/teacher contract, ALL STUDENTS ARE TO RESPECT EACH OTHER. ALL OPINIONS MUST BE VALUED, EVEN IF THEY DIFFER FROM YOUR OWN.

Four Corners Activity • First, listen to the four choices assigned to each corner. • Second, go to the corner that best fits your beliefs. • Next, select a recorder to write three reasons of FACTUAL support for your belief on the whiteboard. • Then, select a reporter to share out your ideas when we come back together. • Finally, share out your ideas.

Final Jeopardy Answer Knowing correct conventions are important to my life now because using correct grammar will please my English teacher, help me earn better grades in Language Arts class, as well as to assist me obtaining a higher score on Florida Writes. In the future, being able to spell, punctuate, capitalize, match verb tense, and select the correct homophone will allow me to follow my dreams. Through my correct convention skills, I will be able to effectively write a strong college or military application essay. Also, proper grammar skills will help me to compose a well-written resume to assist me in obtaining the job I want to apply for. Therefore, strong conventional skills can lead to a successful, contented life for me!
