  1. Stream & Ocean Ecology Facilitated by Charles Orgbon corgbon@greeningforward.org (855) ECO-TEEN ext. 300

  2. My Experiences in Stream Water Monitoring • Georgia Adopt-A-Stream participation since fall 2010 with the Gwinnett Sierra Club • Certified chemical stream water monitor • Developed curriculum resources since 2011

  3. 80 percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from land-based sources, such as runoff pollution. Runoff pollution includes many small sources, like septic tanks, cars, trucks and boats, plus larger sources, such as farms, ranches and forest areas.

  5. Stream Water Monitoring

  6. Things You Can Test • Visual • Biological • Chemical

  7. Chemical Trivia What is the gas law that we use to help understand dissolved oxygen? An increase in PO is usually accompanied by a decrease in what? An increase in conductivity is usually the result of what?

  8. Chemical Trivia What is the gas law that we use to help understand dissolved oxygen? A: Charles’s Law

  9. Chemical Trivia An increase in PO is usually accompanied by a decrease in what? Answer: Dissolved oxygen

  10. Chemical Trivia An increase in conductivity is usually the result of what? Definition of conductivity: also the specific conductance, is a measurement of the electrical conductance per unit distance in an electrolytic or aqueous solution

  11. Coral Bleeching Coral reef bleaching, the whitening of diverse invertebrate taxa, results from the loss of symbiotic zooxantheallae and/or a reduction in photosynthetic pigment concentrations in zooxanthellae residing within scleractinian corals. Coral reef bleaching is caused by various anthropogenic and natural variations in the reef environment including sea temperature, solar irradiance, sedimentation, xenobiotics, subaerial exposure, inorganic nutrients, freshwater dilution, and epizootics. Coral bleaching events have been increasing in both frequency and extent worldwide in the past 20 years. Global climate change may play a role in the increase in coral bleaching events, and could cause the destruction of major reef tracts and the extinction of many coral species.

  12. Sharks You are 1,000 times more likely to drown in the sea than you are to be bitten by a shark.
