  1. The Respiratory System Ms. Kelly 7th Grade Health

  2. Journal: You have learned about the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke and discussed other products these chemicals are found in. These chemicals have harmful effects on the respiratory system, as well as other body systems. Despite having this knowledge, approximately 4000 teens will start smoking their first cigarette today. People say knowledge = power, but this does not always appear to be the case. Why do you think this is? What factors influence adolescents to make poor decisions regarding tobacco use?

  3. Primary Function • To supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. (This is done through breathing.)

  4. BreathingInandOut • Inspiration: “Breathing in” or inhaling • Expiration: “Breathing out” or exhaling • Oxygen: what we breathe in during inspiration • All of the cells in our body need this to live • It is the fuel that makes all body processes run • Carbon dioxide: what we breathe out during expiration • The waste product in our bodies

  5. Parts of the Body Involved • Nose • Throat • Voice box • Windpipe • Lungs

  6. Nose •  Organ used during inhalation and exhalation • Cilia helps trap and filter out dust and other particles that enter during inspiration

  7. Mouth • With nose, warms and humidifies air entering the lungs through inspiration.

  8. Pharynx • AKA “The Throat “ • Carries both food and air

  9. Esophagus • Passageway for food

  10. Epiglottis • A small flap of tissue that covers the air passage when we swallow • Keeps food and liquid from going into lungs

  11. Larynx • AKA “The Voice Box” • Uppermost part of the air-only passage • Contains vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound

  12. Trachea • AKA “The Windpipe” • Extends downward from base of larynx • Held open by “C” rings of cartilage for easy air-flow

  13. Bronchi • Branches off of the trachea into the lungs

  14. Bronchioles • Smaller branches off of the bronchi • Contain alveoli (air sacs)

  15. Alveoli • Where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide actually takes place • Each lung houses about 300 to 400 million alveoli!!

  16. Ribs • Protect the lungs and much of the respiratory tract

  17. Diaphragm • Muscle that separates chest from abdomen • Helps regulate breathingby moving up and down

  18. When we breathe IN • Diaphragm moves downward toward the abdomen • Rib muscles pull the ribs upward and outward, enlargingthe chest cavity and pulling air in through the nose or mouth

  19. When we breathe OUT • Diaphragm moves upward • Chest cavity to get smallerand pushes the gases in the lungs up and out of the nose and mouth.
