  2. Introduction / Description • Hewitt-Trussville High School, Trussville AL • Task: To test the theory that students have a higher comprehension of academic knowledge when it is applied in the field of Career Tech teaching.

  3. Information Clock Tower Project • Geometry • Intro to Drafting • Learn to use Cosine, Sine, and Tangent to calculate the height of our Clock Tower Land Survey Project • Algebra II • Mechanical Drafting • Learn to use Law of Cosines to measure our Athletic Field House and the surrounding area.

  4. Clock Tower Project • The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the basics of the Pythagorean Theorem along with sine, cosine, and tangent. Students will be taught how to find the length and angles of a right triangle. Proportion and scale will be used to draw a scale drawing of the clock tower at Hewitt-Trussville High School.

Project Processes • Students were introduced to the concepts • Students practiced on worksheets • Students were introduced to measuring equipment • Students practiced in the classroom • Students measured clock tower and found heights • Students drew an accurate C.A.D. drawing of the clock tower (to scale). • Students used proportion to scale drawing into a title block for printing.

  10. What Students Said • “I told my math teacher that I already knew how to use sine, cosine and tangent (before they learned it).” • “My math teacher wants to use your project next year.”

  11. What We Learned • Give the students a relevant venue to apply math concepts and their comprehension increases dramatically. • Students really want to see the relevanceof math in their lives.

Land Survey Project Students will gain valuable experience understanding the real world application of Computer Aided Drafting and how it relates to Civil Engineering, and in particular, the surveying industry. You will use your knowledge of advanced mathematics to help solve this real world problem. You will then use this information to create a topographical map of the land and any buildings on this property.

  15. Project Objectives You will need to understand the mathematics that is involved in calculating lengths, angles, and scales to accurately reproduce the area that you are creating. A math lesson will be conducted to demonstrate the Law of Cosines as it pertains to surveying and Engineering.

  16. Project Objectives You will need to understand scale and proportions. This is important in a real map. The scale of your map has to be correct or you can cost the company valuable resources.

  17. Project Objectives You will also need to understand the equipment and safety that is involved with surveying. A guest speaker will be here to discuss this important information…you will need to listen and comprehend the items that he is talking about.

  18. Project Objectives You will have a writing assignment demonstrating your comprehension of the guest speaker and why C.A.D. and advanced math is important to surveying and civil engineering.

  19. Project Objectives You will then actually measure and calculate the area that is needed, including all buildings already on the land. You then will create a topographical map listing this information.

  28. Conclusion • Although these projects did not motivate all students, we saw an increase in understanding, comprehension, attitude and work ethic through these two projects. • These students understood the math concepts much quicker while going through real world and hands on problems.
