  3. Amnesty vs deportation • amnesty: 0-5? • Amnesty- a government’s pardon (forgiveness) of illegal offenses. In the case of immigration, this typically involves giving legal status to those here illegally. • deportation: 0-5? • deportation- the expulsion of an alien from a country • Think-pair-share: describe deportation in your own words

  4. Close Read • Read “DREAM” Act • If they meet these requirements, the DREAM Act would grant the applicants a six-year temporary residency. During this six-year period, applicants would have to either complete at least two years of college or serve in the military. After successfully fulfilling their obligations during the six-year period, they could apply for permanent residency. • Congress has considered the bill several times since the first version in 2003, but it has never passed. Silently answer the questions for discussion • What problem is the DREAM Act intended to resolve? • What are the main arguments for and against the DREAM Act? • What does the DREAM Act stand for? What is significant about the name? • What are implications of the DREAM Act for the people it would effect?

  8. 4th Amendment • Summarize the following in your notes in your own words: • The fourth ammendment states: People have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause.

Controversial Pieces of SB 1070 • During a lawful stop, directs officers to determine immigration status of individuals who they reasonably suspect to be illegal aliens, and for all persons who are arrested. • Makes it a crime to harbor illegal individuals knowingly. • Authorizes officers to arrest an individual without a warrant if they have probable cause to believe the individual has committed any public offense that makes him/her removable from the U.S
