William Golding • 1911 – 1993 • Born in Cornwall, England • Parents = schoolteachers, rationalists, suffragette supporters • Graduated from Oxford University, 1935 • Writer, actor, producer • English & Philosophy teacher • 5 years in the Royal Navy during WWII • (influenced his understanding of the cruelty of humans) • Lord of the Flies - 1954
