  2. Objective • Describe the way of life if the hunter-gatherer • Trace the evolution and cultural evolution of the earliest types of tools used by prehistoric peoples

  3. Hunters and Gatherers Adapt to Environments • They hunted animals and gathered plants for food • If there was no food they would move • They depended on natural environment for shelter • They lived in caves and rock shelters • Made shelters out of: branches, plant fibers, animal skins

  4. Early Humans=Small Bands -Several families lived together -30 people in a small band -The men hunted & fished -The women gathered food (berries and nuts from plants), and cared for the children

  5. Early Humans on the Move Nomads-people who move from place to place -change of seasons -moved to new and distant lands Moving=migration -15,000 B.C., traveled across land bridge connecting Siberia and Alaska =entered Americas -Benefits of moving=knowledge & tools shared -Negative Effect=violence

  6. Fire • 500,000 years ago-Ancient people learned to make and control fire • Provided heat and light • Protection from animals • Cooking • Temper (harden) tools

  7. Development of Technology • All of the ways people apply knowledge, tools, and inventions to meet their needs. • 2 million years ago-stone tools for cutting, storage bags, and stone hand axes were created. • A tool called an awls was used for making holes

  8. Complex Tools • Hunting bows made of wood • Flint spearheads and metal tools Used for: • hunting • Building shelter The results equaled control over environments and a better way of life

  9. Human Culture Language=work together in hunting and gathering Religion=worship of God, gods, or spirits • Everything in nature had a spirit • Cave paintings=spirits of animals

  10. Art • Found on caves and rock shelters • Carried art (figurines and jewelry) • Bulls, stallions, bison • Africa, Europe, Australia, the Americas • Music, dance, stories
