Intro to Venezuela • Venezuela borders three major countries (Columbia, Brazil, Guyana) • Venezuela’s flag colors consists of red, blue, and yellow. • Venezuela’s landscape is mostly Grassland. • Venezuelan people speak mostly Spanish.
Venezuela Culture • The official language is Spanish. • People live in normal houses or huts. • 27.5 million people call Venezuela home. • About the size of Texas • The Venezuelan currency is called the Bolivar. Bolivar is issued in the following: 100, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, and 20000.

History of Venezuela • Venezuela was colonized by Spain in 1522. • Nuevo Toledo was the first establishment. • When colonized by Spain, the locals felt enslaved. • Francisco de Miranda declared independence on 5 July 1811. • Most of Venezuela’s 19th century was ruled by a communist (or dictatorship) government.
Pandura • Also known as the trichordon. • It is a chordophone • It was known to be long necked and have a very small chamber. • First made in 1884 • There are two stringed, three stringed, and even four stringed. • The pandura is a traditional Venezuelan instrument and has been played for centuries. • It is played just like our American guitar.
Tambora • (from the Spanish word tambor, meaning drum) • First used by African slaves for music. • Now it is commonly used by Venezuelans. • In most cases, the tambora was made out of salvaged rum bottles. • It is played just like our American drum.
Cuatro • A Latin American instrument of the guitar or lute family. • The cuatro is smaller size than a common guitar. • Cuatro means four in spanish, though these instruments are now commonly made with more strings. • Similar shape as the ukulele. • The cuatro is a chordophone. • It is noted that the first made cuatro was made in the 15th century.
Bandola • The bandola is a pear shaped guitar. • It is most commonly used in Venezuela and Columbia. • There is seven frets and 4 strings on the instrument. • There are two types on bandolas, the bandola osiental, and the bandola llanera. • It is a chordophone. • First one made in the 1920’s
