Background • According to NIOSH: • Approx 2 million workers in the US are exposed to animals/animal products • 33% have allergic symptoms • 10% have symptoms of animal induced allergy/asthma • Higher risk: vet techs, veterinarians, laboratory workers, (or anyone else with close, prolonged exposure)

  3. Animal related asthma/allergies are exaggerated reactions of the body’s immune system to allergens (dander, fur, scales, body wastes, saliva) The most common route of exposure? Generally symptoms subside once exposure is eliminated “sensitization” generally takes months or years AAD says 85% of ppl will develop a rxn to poison ivy given repeated exposure Allergens/Asthma

  4. We want to protect two populations: evacuees and post shelter occupants How? Appropriate facilities Physical barriers Ensure animals and humans are housed in separate facilities w/ separate HVAC systems Post op cleaning/disinfection Co-sheltering
