  1. Operation Hygiene Support our Troops Stand up to Infection

  2. What is Operation Hygiene? • In an effort to reach out to the under represented populations within the nursing profession, Operation Hygiene is a project that will not only provide deployed servicemen and women with the necessary resources to prevent the spread of illness and infection, but will also provide resources that introduce the endless opportunities that the field of Nursing has to offer.

  3. Minorities/Military? • The Pentagon calls the military the “Model of Diversity” • Minorities make up more than a third of active duty military • 17% African-Americans • 11% Hispanics • Women make of 14.4 % of Department of Defense

  4. Hygiene Items • As current and future healthcare workers, we truly understand the importance of hygiene and preventing the spread of infection and illness. • While hand sanitizer, soap and water are commonly found here in the America, these items can be hard to come by for our service members who are deployed in support of our country.

  5. Johnson and Johnson Nursing Material • http://www.discovernursing.com/resources/free-materials#no-filters • The link above will allow you to sign up to receive free nursing materials.

  6. Letter from your school’s BTN or President • While this letter is intended to reach out to the under-represented populations within the Nursing field, the content of the letter is ultimately up to the discretion of the BTN or President. • We will be providing and example of a letter that was previously sent to deployed veterans to use as a guideline.

  7. How does this project actually work? • Nursing Students, along with support from their local American Legion Organizations and other community assistance, will collect hygiene items to be packaged and shipped overseas to those deployed servicemen and women.

  8. First things first! • Before you begin collecting items to send to our troops overseas, make sure you have established a way to provide funding for shipping! • There are several organizations who are more than willing to provide the shipping to send these packages overseas. Here are a few that we have had success with: American Legion, non-profit organizations, local churches, school support.

  9. American Legion • The American Legion is an organization that focuses on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities. • Most American Legions are willing to provide funding for shipping care packages overseas and can also provide addresses for deployed servicemembers. • Click on the link below to find an American Legion Post closest to you. • http://www.legion.org • Top right corner of website, click on “Find a Post”
