  2. Don’t put yourself at risk – think D.R.A.B.

  3. What is D.R.A.B? • Check for DANGER • Check for any RESPONSE from the casualty • Check for blockages in the casualty’s AIRWAY • Check to see if the casualty is BREATHING • If they are, you may have to put them in the RECOVERY POSITION

  5. RecoveryPOSITION After you have done D.R.A.B. Kneel beside casualty Place the arm closest to you at a right angle to their head, palm facing up Bring other arm across body and place back of hand onto their cheek Bend casualty’s outside leg at the knee ready to roll their body towards you Grip under their knee and gently roll casualty towards you onto their side, keeping their leg bent to rest their weight on Rest their head on their hands, tilting it back with mouth open in case casualty vomits Keep them warm and reassure them if they become conscious

  6. WHAT ABOUT CPR? 2 x Rescue Breaths 30 x compressions

CPRCardio PulmonARYReSUCITATION Kneel beside casualty Place one hand over the other into a fist Place palms in the middle of the breastbone Keeping arms straight, push from the shoulders Begin compressions, keeping the same rhythm, pushing down firmly After 30 compressions give 2 rescue breaths to inflate the lungs Watch carefully for casualty’s chest to rise Continue to do this until more help arrives

  8. IF SOMEONE IS CHOKING…

  9. HELPING A CASUALTY WHO IS CHOKING 5 x firm back slaps 5 x abdominal thrusts

  10. Follow the same procedure for casualties as young as 18mths…

  11. IF A CASUALTY IS BLEEDING… • Reassure the casualty; calm them down • DON’T remove any object from the cut (it may make the cut bleed out) • With a clean cloth apply gentle direct pressure to close the cut area • Elevate the wound, or lower the casualty to the floor(so the heart doesn’t have to keep working so hard) • Keep the casualty warm and alert
