  3. Slowly the red drained from Jack’s cheeks, then came back with a painful rush.

  4. Then Simon stood up and took the conch from Piggy, who was so astonished that he remained on his feet.

  5. They built a pyramid of leaves and twigs, branches and logs, on the bare sand by the platform.

  6. The pigs lay, bloated bags of fat, sensuously enjoying the shadows under the trees.

  7. Simon had passed through the area of fruit trees but today the littluns had been too busy with the fire on the beach and they had not pursed him there.
