Peter Thiel, entirely Peter Andreas Thiel (born October 11, 1967, Frankfurt am Main, West Germany), German-American entrepreneur and commercial director who helped found PayPal, an e-commerce company, and Palantir Technologies, a participating software firm into data analysis. He has also invested in several well-known businesses, including Facebook. When he was one year old, Thiel and his family moved from Germany to the United States. He studied philosophy at Stanford University (Bachelor of Arts, 1989), during which time he founded The Stanford Review, a newspaper that criticizes political correctness. He then attended Stanford Law School and shortly after graduation in 1992 published The Myth of Diversity (with David Sachs) on alleged political intolerance at the university. In 1998, Thiel and several others co-founded Confinity, which was designed to handle payments between Palm Pilots. The following year, the company merged with Elon Musk's X.com to form PayPal, with Thiel becoming its CEO and chairman.Created to create a "new world currency" e-commerce company specializing in Internet money transfers. PayPal has proven to be extremely successful, aided by its use in the eBay online marketplace. In 2002, eBay acquired PayPal for $ 1.5 billion. The deal made Thiel a multimillionaire and he subsequently invested in a number of startups, notably Facebook (2004), an online social networking service.
