ABCDs of FirstAid-Airway,Breathing, CompressionandDefibrillator • One ofthebasicskillsthatevery person shouldhaveisCPRandfirstaidtrainingthat canhelp someoneincaseofemergency.Imaginehowbeneficial it wouldbeto knowhowto performfirstaid orbeingawareofwhatisaCPR procedurewhenputinanemergencysituation.Whileitisalways besttoenrolyourselfinprofessionalfirstaidtraining, thisABCDFirstAidguidewehavecuratedfor you can help you getanunderstandingofwhatallfirstaidentails. • Let’sbeginwiththebasics: • If you ever have to face an emergency, you must keep in mind some important things while you offer firstaidto thevictim.These are oftenconsideredthe "ABCs"offirstaid. • Firstaidistheinitialtreatmentprovidedto somebodywho isseverely illor woundedbeforethearrival ofemergencymedicalservices(EMS).Anindividual'slife canbesaved inanemergencyby providingfirstaidimmediately.Attemptingtolearnbasicfirstaidskillsmighthelpyoudealwitha medical emergency. • ItisacombinationofABCDfirstaidplusaDRSrespondeguide.DRSABCDis anabbreviationfor- • Danger:Alwaystake intoaccount thethreat to yourself, anyonlookers,andthe woundedorunwellindividual.When goingtosomeone'said,besure you arenot puttingyourselfatrisk. • Response: You must check if the person is in a conscious state or if they are respondingto youbytalking,touchingtheirhandsorsqueezingtheirshoulder. • Sendforhelp:Youcancall112—theemergencyhelplinenumber—andremember toanswereachofthe operator’squestionsproperly. • Airway:Youmustcheckifthepersonisbreathing oriftheirairwayisclear. Ifthe individualisresponsive,awake,andtheirairways areclear, find outexactlyhowyou willassistthemwithanyinjuriestheymayhave.However, ifthepersonisunconscious andnotresponding,youmustchecktheirairway.Youcan dothisbyopeningtheir mouth and looking inside it to check for content. This is important because if the person’sairwayisblocked,itcan becomedifficult forthemtobreatheproperly. • Breathing: The oxygen needed for life is delivered to the body through breathing. Thisiswhyit iscritical to assesswhetherornottheindividualisbreathing. Follow thesestepsto determineifanindividualisbreathingproperly: • CPR (cardiopulmonaryresuscitation) • Continue with the30compressionsand twobreathsata rateofaround five repetitions every two minutes until you hand over to the ambulance officials. • CPR procedureforkidsunderthe ageofeightandnewbornsisquite similar,andyoumayacquirethesetechniquesinfirstaid CPRtraining. • Thefirst aidkit • In additionto understandingsomebasicfirstaidmethods,itiscriticalthathomesandofficeshave • afirstaidkitthatsuitstheirneeds,isverywellorganised,wellstocked, andeasilyaccessible.Based onthesetting, thecomponents shouldbeacceptablefordealingwithavarietyofemergencycases. Make surethattheinjuredindividualislyingdownormaybe sitting down. • Make surethatyou are ontheinjured sideoftheindividual. • Providesupporttotheirinjuredbodypart beforeusingabandage. • Asyoubandage theleg,besurethateachroundoverlapsthe onebeforeit. • Putitanother way,bywrapping thebandagein a"figure eight"pattern. • You must make sure that you don’t wrap the bandage too tight as it may reduce thebloodflow. • YoumayusetheHansaplastCottonCrepeBandageovertheinjuredbodypart. • Afteryouaredonewrappingthebandage,anarmslingmay berequired tolifttheinjuredforearmand reduce itsmovement. • Youmayarrangetheindividual’sarmintoa"V"bybendingtheelbowsuchthatthe hand restsnearthe hollowwherethe shoulder meetsthecollarbone. • Createahammock-likewrapovertheinjuredarmby gentlygatheringthematerial attheelbowanddrawing it tightwithoutremovingthebandagefromtheinjured arm. • Make alongspiralbytwistingthematerial,bringingitaroundandupthebackof theperson. • At the individual's fingertips, tightly knot the two ends securely. Firstaidforsomeoneunconscious • Kneelnexttothemonthe ground. • Placetheir nearestarmata90-degreeangle totheirbody,alongwiththeirpalm facingupwards. • To placetheirhandunderthecheekthat isclosesttoyou,theymustbendtheir opposite arm. • For stages4 and 5,keepitin position. • Withyoursparehand,bendtheirdistalkneeatastraightanglesuchthat it lays level on thefloor. • Turn themontotheirsideandtowardsyoubygentlypullingontheirbent knee.Checkifthehandontheirbentarmhasstillbeensupportingtheirhead. • Tilt theirheadslightlyto thebackandraisetheirchinto gentlyopentheir airway. • Examinetheirairwayto seeifanythingisobstructingit. • Firstaidfor apersonchoking • To ensure that the individual is breathing normally, it is important to maintain a clear airway. You may haveto rolltheinjuredpersonontheirside.However, insomecases,such asanaccident,spinal injuryis always consideredapossibility.
