  1. Air Pollution Regional Research Network for  Improving Air Quality in Asian Developing Countries (AIRPET) AIRPET website: http://serd.ait.ac.th/airpet Kim Oanh N.T. Asian Institute of Technology

  2. Highlights • About AIRPET: present and future activities • Findings in 6 cities • PM levels and source apportionment • Control devices • Dispersion modeling and LRT studies • Demonstration projects (integrated AQM for target sources)

  3. Sponsored by Sida Coordinated by AIT http://www.arrpet.ait.ac.th/ Asian Regional Research Program on Environmental Technology (ARRPET) Four projects in ARRPET: Air pollution (AIRPET) Solid waste Hazardous waste Wastewater 18 NRIs from 8 Countries Phase 1: 2001-2003 Phase 2: 2004-2007

  5. Existing data Continuous monitoring Assessment of pollution status Database Experiments Policy study Modeling tools Control Technology AQM strategies Lab-scale devices Demonstration: AQM for target sources Cleaner air

  6. Monitoring issue: PM Monitoring for Source Apportionment • Sampling: spatial and temporal distribution • Phase 1: 3300 PM samples (PM2.5, PM10, TSP) and 250 samples for POP • Phase 2: 3500 planned PM samples, 500 samples of gases (BTEX) and POPs • PM monitoring at remote sites • PM analysis: mass, water soluble ions, elements, EC/OC (BC) and POP with established QA/QC • Reconstructed mass • Receptor modeling: CMB8, PMF and others

  7. PM2.5 in 6 AIRPET cities (2001-2004) USEPA 24h STD: 65 ug/m3 Annual: 15 ug/m3

  8. PM10 in 6 AIRPET cities (2001-2004) US 24h STD: 150 ug/m3 Annual: 50 ug/m3

  9. Ratio: PM2.5/PM10

  10. Annual average of source contributions to PM 2.5

  11. PM10-2.5 PM10 PM10-2.5 PM10 PM10-2.5 Annual average of source contributions to PM10-2.5/PM10

  12. Monitoring at remote sites for LRT study Sampling site in Khao Yai

  13. Issue 2: Control Devices (lab scale) Developed and Tested

  14. Control Devices Indonesia: A Multi Plate Reactor India: Photo catalytic Reactor China: Monolith Catalytic Materials Used for VOCs

  15. Issue 3: Dispersion Modeling Tool for Air Quality Management

  16. Impact of Management Strategies on Peak 1-hr O3 in Bangkok (UAM-V) VOC emission reduced NOx reduced VOC increased

  17. Modeling O3 over South East Asia, CMAQ-MM5

  18. AOT based on hindcast ozone for one month of Dec. 2003

  19. Long-range Transport by HYSPLIT 4

  20. Issue 4: Integrated AQ management demonstration projects

  21. Integrated Air Quality Management Issue Indonesia: Blood Lead Level Test 2005 Vietnam: Applying simple control device for brick manufacturing

  22. Indonesia: blood Lead results 2005 201 students were tested, 57% had Pb in blood higher than WHO guideline

  23. Rice Straw Burning Exposure monitoring Emission monitoring

  24. Acknowledgement • Swedish International Development Agency • AIRPET team at AIT and regional • Master and Ph D students involved in the network • Many others who helped in different ways

  25. Thank you !
