  2. Physical Examination • A examination is needed to evaluate health status • Poor health status may lead to depression or illness • Depression also suppresses the immune system which may lead to illness • Symptoms of depression are sleeplessness and loss of appetite

  3. Coping with Depression • Strategies: • Stay connected with friends • Practice stress and anger-management skills • Avoid use of alcohol and drugs • Take steps to develop resiliency • Practice healthful behaviors • Eat nutritious meals • Get exercise • Seek treatment if these strategies do not relieve depression

  4. Therapy • Teen who are depressed can benefit from therapy • Cognitive behavior therapy is a type of psychotherapy that involves behavior and cognitive therapy. • Other forms of therapy: • Cognitive Behavior • Behavior • Cognitive • Individual Counseling • Combination of therapy and medication

  5. Medication • A physician will determine if a teen needs prescription drugs for depression • The drug used to relieve depression is an antidepressant, antidepressants often take weeks to become effective • Antidepressants can be used to treat depression for adults, but are still being tested for people under the age of 18

  6. Suicide • Suicide is the intentional taking of one’s own life • Parasuicide is a suicide attempt in which a person does not intend to die; Example: slashing of the wrist • Cluster suicides is a series of suicides occurring within a short period of time and involving people who are connected in some way
