  2. Historical Setting • ESZ -Prof Dato’ Dr Sharifah Hjapsah, VC, UKM’s idea. • She met all the Principals in Port Dickson, just a couple of weeks after she became VC of UKM • Throw the idea out • Made Residential College PTJ • Introduce ESZ as a product.

  3. Prof Dato Dr Sharifah Hapsah: Problems: “We have with us today a sizeable number of students who are unable to string proper sentences in English Even those with passable proficiency shy away from speaking for lack of confidence.” NST 27 April 2008

  4. continue “The way to address this is to provide more opportunities for students to communicate in English but not through more theoretical courses in English. Only through constant practice and with proper guidance can our students develop the proficiency so that by the time they graduate they will be more confident to use the language. Hence the strategy of using residential college as ESZ .” SharifahHapsah 27 April 2008

  6. English Camp 3 days and 2 nights • Brisdale Hotel, KL • Port Dickson (we should have a special English camp for MPP but they were too busy .) Programmes: • poco-poco • Dream College • Language for discussion’ • Pronunciation and tongue twister • Conducting meeting • Memo writing • Interpersonal communication • College TV

DatoOnn Residential College Programmes for ESZ JAKSA’s Retreat in Langkawi Preparing all JAKSA for the orientation week (Minggu Mesra Pelajar) All meeting conducted in English Ask each JAKSA to speak of his/her own portfolio Minggu Mesra Pelajar – at UKM level its in Bahasa Malaysia Back in the college – English

  9. continue After the 14 days- • English classes for students with band 1 and 2 • Bahasa Classes for Indonesian Students • Mandarin classes for those who are interested • Arabic classes for FPI students • Changed major sign board at College Administrative Center • Digital Library – once or twice a week a librarian will conduct classes at KDO to teach first year to use computer and conducting simple research for materials and for final year students who are doing their project paper. • Searching would means- most materials are in English

  10. continue What we still cannot do: • Critical thinking classes (we used to have it- conducted by fellow who is tutor- foreign graduate) • Coffee corner – pot talk Why? No one to conduct it Fellow not capable – can teach English as a language but unable to conduct discussion in English in various topic. Those who can, can only do it in bahasa.

What are KDO plan for future for ESZ 2nd semester • Conduct two weeks programmes for all students beginning of semester • Camp –English Eco-camp • Essay competition • Staff English language classes –before June 2009 as we will be receiving foreign students • To conduct small survey to find out rate of success (assessment)
