  3. Basics • Author: John, the beloved (1:1, 4, 9; 22:8) • Date: c. 94-96 A.D. Note: Early church leaders like Irenaeus, Eusebius, Hypolytis, Victorinus, and Jerome wrote that John penned this book from exile on Patmos toward the end of Domitian’s reign

  4. Purpose: to encourage the believers of Asia Minor to be faithful to the Lord and to persevere through their present persecution, by revealing that Jesus, their Messiah, was in control of their circumstances and would be the Victor (with them) in the end.

  5. Outline of Revelation (1:19) I. “The things which you have seen”(1) (Prologue / Vision) II. “The things which are”(2-3) (Letters to the seven churches) • “The things which shall take place hereafter”(4-22) (Tribulation / Return / Millennium)
