  1. ISUAL Development Status and Schedule H. Heetderks

  2. ISUAL Imager Status • ETU Design and Fabrication are Complete • ETU Testing 70% Complete • All electrical functions fully checked out • Motor Controller, Wheel Position Sensor, and Filter Mechanism all working • Photo cathode power supply and switch • Heater and Thermal monitor circuits • Camera Electronics fully checked out • All Operating Modes have been verified • High Voltage Supplies conformally coated to Flight standards • Tested to full voltage at ambient pressure • All Printed Circuit Board layouts have been up dated to current Flight status • All Machined and Purchased Parts for Flight Unit are in House • This includes delivery of all Barr Filters • New Thermostats and Heaters on order for thermal control upgrade • New Tapers on order for improved optics performance • New TEC machined parts being made to improve CCD cooling • Flight Printed Circuit Boards will be etched later in ETU test program NCKU UCB Tohoku ISUAL Status & Schedule H. Heetderks

  3. ISUAL Spectrophotometer Status • ETU unit with two Photometer Channels has been completed and taken to Kitt Peak, Colorado for testing on actual Sprites • System worked as planned except for unexpected Cosmic Ray contamination • Problem appears to be exacerbated by scintillations in the sapphire window of the PM tube • This type of contamination interferes with use of the photometer as a trigger source • We have developed an electronic technique for rejecting the cosmic ray events • We are also investigating the use of glass tubes • A revised pre-Amplifier design is currently being tested • This is expected to be a relatively simple change • The primary modification is to the Actel on the IDC board in the AEP • All Machined and Purchased Parts for Flight Unit are in House • Exception: EMR Photomultiplier with Magnesium Fluoride window for Channel 2 (UV) • All Barr Filters have been delivered • New Thermostats and Heaters on order for thermal control upgrade • Flight Printed Circuit Board changes have not yet been made to the layout NCKU UCB Tohoku ISUAL Status & Schedule H. Heetderks

  4. Associated Electronics Package Status • ETU Low Voltage Power Supply Board fabrication is complete • Board is fully functional with all unit testing complete • ETU Power Controller Board fabrication is complete • Board is fully functional with all unit testing complete • ETU Data Processing Unit Board fabrication is complete • Board functionality is 50% complete and unit testing is 40% complete • ETU Mass Memory Board fabrication is complete • Board functionality is 100% complete and unit testing is 50% complete • Completion of testing is contingent on delivery of AP and DCM ETU’s • ETU Data Compression Module Board fabrication is complete • Board functionality is 10% complete and unit testing is 5% complete • ETU Instrument Data Controller Board is currently in design stage • This board contains the interfaces to the Array Photometer and the Spectrophotometer • AP interface design is now complete • SP interface design is currently being refined to deal with AP cosmic ray contamination problem • All Machined and Purchased Parts for Flight Unit are in House • This includes delivery of all electronic parts including rad hard IC’s • Flight Printed Circuit Boards will be etched later in ETU test program NCKU UCB Tohoku ISUAL Status & Schedule H. Heetderks

  5. ISUAL Software Status • Commands and Engineering Functions and Telemetry are up and Running • Science Data Collection Software is complete and under test • Overall, Instrument Software is about 80% complete • All GSE functions are fully functional • Overall, GSE Software is about 90% complete NCKU UCB Tohoku ISUAL Status & Schedule H. Heetderks

  6. ISUAL Array Photometer Contracting Status • Contract between UCB and the Japanese company AD Advanced Technology is in place • AP development is fully under way NCKU UCB Tohoku ISUAL Status & Schedule H. Heetderks

  7. ISUAL Schedule Highlights • ETU Assembly will Complete by 1 Feb, 2002 • Release of Circuit Boards for Flight Unit Etch 15 Feb, 2002 • Fully Assembled Flight Unit 1 May, 2002 • Flight Unit Functional Testing Complete 15 July, 2002 • Flight Unit Environmental Testing Complete 15 Sep, 2002 NCKU UCB Tohoku ISUAL Status & Schedule H.
