Project Status (3) • DOE-IPR Status Review Report from April Received • Responses have been prepared to the report recommendations • Preparing for the July 15, 2009 CD-3 Review • Held in Germantown • LUSI PM, Instrument Scientists and Controls Rep to travel • Working on the second part of the Baseline Change to incorporate ARRA effects into the baseline • Still need to incorporate two L2 milestones into schedule and adjust schedules appropriately (Waiting on TCCC) • First month of reporting on ARRA accounts has been completed • Some corrections are needed to the baseline – These will be incorporated in May

Lessons Learned • LUSI has reviewed the SNS Instrument Beamline Construction Lessons Learned – Many items were already incorporated • System Integration • Design • Procurement • Scheduling • Construction • Project Management • LCLS has started a Beamline Lessons Learned Document • LUSI Lessons Learned • Procurements demand substantial resources – Project and SLAC

Lessons Learned (1) • System Integration • Design Criteria – In place and controlled for LUSI • Baseline Scope Review – LUSI uses established LCLS procedures • Design Guide – Could be developed • Naming – Names established early • P&ID – Not standard at SLAC • Radiation Shielding Configuration • CD-4 Parameters Drawing – Key Performance Parameters • Subject Matter Experts involved early in design - • Integration of electrical systems – Function of Controls • System Integration Review • Plan for Instrument Operation Early – Scientists are already planning for operation • PPS Beam Sweep Plan early – LCLS ops working on this • Plan for Shielding Configuration Control • Complete Shielding Early • Confirm “As-built” conditions early

Lessons Learned (2) • Design • Shielding • Keep SLAC RP involved – Follow LCLS procedures – One POC • Documentation • Don’t wait for “just in time delivery” – strains resources • Integration of PPS and non-PPS cabling - Controls • Mechanical Interferences • We are working on processes to minimize this • Vacuum Compatibility • LCLS standards exist • Ergonomic Features • Scientists and Engineers are very involved – experienced • Motion Control – Standards established by controls • Crane Design • Extra Vessel Penetrations – Where possible

Lessons Learned – (4) • Construction • Survey and Alignment • Involve Survey and Alignment early • Oxygen Deficiency (ODH) Detectors • Install when clean conditions exist • Project Management • Advance Procurement Approvals • Heavily used on LUSI • IRR Procedures and Approach to IRR • LCLS to generate for AMO – LUSI will follow these • Project Close-out • Takes longer than expected • LCLS Photon Systems • Scope Definition and Tracking needs more attention • Affects interfaces – Who is doing what
