  2. Laura Dorton • This is my 9th year teaching at Owen County High School! • Graduated from Owen County High School…old building • Graduated from Eastern Kentucky University • Graduated from University of the Cumberland's, masters degree

  3. My Girls • I have two daughters. Emma is 6 and starting 1st grade. Reagan is 2 and enjoying her days at the babysitter.

  4. The Hubby • I am married to Scottie Dorton • He works at Dow Corning in Ghent

  5. About Algebra II • This is a graduation requirement!!!!!!! • There will be an End of Course Exam at the end of the school year….this will be your final exam • Lots of new material will be covered. • Much more in depth than Algebra I

  6. HELP!!!! • If at any point you feel like you need extra help PLEASE ASK! • I stay after school most days and you can stop by and receive extra help. • I can also set up an appointment and work with you at a certain time.

  7. Vocabulary • We will be working on vocabulary a lot this school year. • You will be responsible for this as HOMEWORK! • You can use textbooks or the Internet to get your definition….be resourceful.

  8. Cylinder: a 3 dimensional object made up of 2 circle and a rectangle (forms the middle of the cylinder)

Practice Problems • When working on math problems it is important to show your work. • This allows me to see your entire thought process but also help you if you get stuck. • If working on practice problems for homework and you get stuck, go as far as possible and then write a little detail about what you are having trouble with.

  11. Turning In Assignments • 1. Make sure your name is on the paper…Top right corner • 2. If it is a piece of notebook paper…label the assignment • 3. All pass papers to the left…I will then collect the papers from the last row of desks

  12. Calculators • Once you have turned in your Calculator Policy sheet, I will give you a calculator number. • This will be your calculator to use every day in class. • You will get it out of the calculator box as soon as you come into class and return the calculators at the end of class.

  13. Flashbacks • The flashbacks in class will be questions from practice ACT exams. • You will be given one minute to work on the problem. • After the one minute I will go over the problem and will have the opportunity to correct your answer if you got it wrong. • You will also write down any shortcuts I may give to help you remember in the future!

  14. Group Projects • Some groups you will be allowed to select who you work with and other times I will select for you. • Each person is graded individually based on the amount of effort they put into the project. • You will be given clear instructions for each assignment and how you will be graded.

  15. Textbooks • We will be using textbooks in class but not everyday. • If you need to take a book home for any reason, you will need to check the book out and then return the book to me the next school day.

  16. Folder Checks • There will be a folder check at the end of each unit. • I will be letting you know what items need to be in your folder throughout each unit. • I will give a slip of paper at least two days before folder checks are due for you to make sure you have all the assignments and have them in the correct order.
