  2. What do we need to inject? (1) MKI Transfer line Q5 Q4 D2 TDI MSI TCLIA + TCLIB IP2 TCDD kicks in the vertical plane • Last 200 m of transfer line • Injection Septum MSI (5 magnets, MSIB and MSIA, one power converter) • Injection kicker MKI (4 magnets, 54 kV) • Injection stopper TDI • Mask TCDD • (Auxiliary collimators TCLIA and TCLIB) Nov 08, 2007

  3. What do we need to inject? (2) • BI in the LHC • BTVs – application: Fabio • For point 2: BTVSS.6L2.B1, BTVSI.C5L2.B1, BTVSI.A5L2.B1, BTVST.A4L2 • BLMs (relevant for injection tuning) – partly SPS timing, partly LHC timing • Injection acquisition for LHC BLMs: application? • 5 LHC BLMs on the MSI AND 5 SPS BLMs on the MSI (the last TI2 and TI8 ones) • 3 LHC BLMs on the TDI • no BLM on TCDD, but at entrance of D1 • (BLMs for TCLIA/TCLIB) • (no mention of LHC BPMs, nothing special for injection region) MKI Transfer line Q5 Q4 D2 TDI MSI TCLIA + TCLIB IP2 TCDD Nov 08, 2007

Interfaces (1) • Interlocking • Supervision application for East and West Extraction in SPS will be updated to include injection BICs • MKI needs injection permit to pulse remotely • ALICE ZDC unmaskable • LHC beam permit unmaskable • Masking needs LHC Safe Beam Flag (SLP, timing) • Master BIC will be updated using the ‘real’ logic (next year) • SMP generator box for: • Beam presence • LHC SB • SPS probe flag • SPS SB Injection BIC still missing Nov 08, 2007

Interfaces (2) • RF – pre-pulse • optical fiber link to point 4 • LBDS – abort gap watch dog • direct fiber link with point 6 • OASIS: • injection permit • BETS window • watch dog window (AGK) • PFN voltage • circulating intensity • like to have this as a fixed display • Timing • “Next Injection Ring” event • Injection warning (1000 ms before injection) • SLP energy for BETS SPS example, no AGK Nov 08, 2007

Transfer lines • Power converters: • Power converters including MSI: SPS MUGEFs • hardware commissioned (heat run,…) • settings available – SPS timing – SPS cycle • interlocking via transfer line BICs (ROCS surveillance) • BI: • All applications ready • All equipment already defined for • logging (DB and SDDS) • fixed displays • dedicated applications (BTVs, BLMs, BTCs, YASP) • still missing: critical settings for BLMs • TCDIs: • Only three collimators in TI 2 hardware commissioned • Not connected to BICs yet • (Two partly beam commissioned • setting up methods still to be worked on) • Application available • critical settings do not exist yet Nov 08, 2007

TDI/TCDD - collimators • Needs LSA settings and critical settings via collimator control • User permit to Injection BIC • TDI needs to be in “protect” during injection • User permit to Ring BIC, beam specific • TDI needs to be out after injection • TCDD in IR2 moveable (in/out) • User permit to Injection BIC → needs to be closed during injection • Alarms → needs to be open otherwise • Controls: collimator control • TCLIA/TCLIB → collimators, Stefano, interlocking like TDI TDIringBIC: TDIpos > TDIringBIC MKI standby: t0 TDIinjBIC: TDIpos < TDIinjBIC Nov 08, 2007

Other stuff • Knobs for polarity changes of experimental magnets, separation on/off, crossing on/off: • experimental magnet, correctors, compensators, MKI • Orthogonal steering at MSI → YASP • Injection steering: • MKI part of it? • define LSA parameter angle for MKI → kV • Injection triggered acquisition!!!! Need to be able to correlate beam loss to injection event • Nothing foreseen for the BLMs • Only 1 Hz data publishing • → BLMs on TDI: LHC BLMs!!! • “Injection” logging? • to be defined • ‘SDA’ – XPOC like? • Fixed displays • to be defined • (Injection quality check → SIS) • not an issue for start-up Nov 08, 2007

Testing…dry (1) • Full testing of injection equipment requires: • Timing • LHC cycling • SLP energy distributed and generated by the LBDS BETS • LHC beam permit – closed loop (LBDS armed → LHC closed!!), closing locally? • Alice ZDC giving green light (for point 2) • LHC Safe Beam Flag distributed • TDI, TCLIs, TCDIs masked • Functions defined for TDI (TCLIA/TCLIB as well) • TCDD controlled within collimator control system • Cooling (TDI, TCDD, …) • Logging defined • Sequencer: injection sequence, timing tables prepared • RF pre-pulse (simulation mode?) • LBDS synchronisation commissioned → abort gap watchdog • Full testing of injection interlocking requires: • Interlock functions defined for TDI (TCLIA/TCLIB) • Interlock functions defined for TCDIs • TL pulsing – MSI FMCM, MSI PC sum fault • Real Master BIC to verify injection permit result • LHC-SPS flag distribution Nov 08, 2007

Testing…dry (2) • Scenario: interleaved injections: • Sequencer – injection sequencing • “Next Injection Ring” event used by MKIs to condition which one to pulse • ONE injection warning event: injection warning for charging PFNs • Pre-pulse for pulse • Scenario: injection – the whole chain: injector chain → first turns in the LHC: • Sequencer – injection sequencing • Mini-conditioning of MKIs?? • Uncoupled injection timing, simulated pre-pulse? • Timing table with all events • BI stuff as well: BLMs!!!??? • Injection logging Nov 08, 2007

Testing…dry (3) • Scenario: inject & dump: • Sequencer… • Together with LBDS • Dump on first turn • Scenario: injection finished – prepare for ramp: • Downstream TEDs in • MKI disabled • MKI standby! (before moving TDI) • Move out TDI → state transition: injection permit, no state transition: beam permit • Move out TCLIA/TCLIB → like TDI • Move out TCDD in IR2 • … Nov 08, 2007

Summary • Lots of stuff already there • Equipment partly already hardware commissioned • Applications • either just need to be configured for the LHC • or are under way • Logging and alarms still need some work • Triggered acquisition for BLMs during injection? • Testing needs to be worked out carefully • Parallelism • Lots of details to be defined Nov 08, 2007
