  8. In response to the Soviets getting the bomb, Truman authorized the creation of the Thermonuclear (Hydrogen) Bomb. This bomb is significantly more powerful than the ones used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Russians exploded theirs a year after the U.S.

  9. Both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. competed to have the biggest, baddest, arms(weapons) in the World. This became known as the arms race.

  10. The Tsar Bomba • The largest bomb ever dropped was by the Soviets in 1961 • It was used as a warning to the U.S. • It was dropped at 10,000 feet and detonated at 4,000 feet • The bomb was dropped out of a Russian bomber and a parachute was attached, allowing the pilot to get at least 25 miles away from the blast The Tsar Bomba (54,000 pounds)

  11. The Arms Race • The Tsar Bomba got its name after the Russian practice of building really large things for display • The bomb was made to detonate with a 100 megaton blast, but at the last minute the Russians configured the bomb to blow up at 50 megatons (50 million sticks of dynamite) • The blast was seen from 500 miles away, could have cause third degree burns from 50 miles away, windows were broken in Finland hundreds of miles away • By comparison, the largest bomb the U.S. ever exploded was 15 megatons

  12. Other Examples of Russian Manufacturing • The Tsar tank • The Tsar Koloko (Bell) – 444,000 pounds of bronze, 25 feet tall, 18 feet wide

  13. Other Examples of Russian Manufacturing • Tsar Puska Cannon (King of Cannons) • 100,000 pounds • 15 feet in length

  14. Nuclear Weapons Testing • July, 1946, the U.S. invited the world to see how powerful our country was • The Bikini Islands in the Pacific was used as a nuclear weapon testing ground from 1946-1958 • How do you think the Soviets will view this event?

  15. What is an Atomic Bomb? • I am not really sure – all you need to know is that it has awesome destroying capabilities

  19. Apollo program • USA spent the 60s trying to catch up to the Soviets.

  20. Armstrong lands on moon! • What is the purpose of a space program?

  21. Americans are a hardy bunch • For only $150-200 you could purchase a bomb shelter • The idea was to stay in the shelter while the world was radioactive • Food, water, books, and magazines were stored in the shelter for emergencies
