  3. PENING Why do we blow the Shofar? Exodus 19:16 “On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and there was the sounding of a very loud SHOFAR blast. Everyone in the camp trembled.” Because this is the way G-D begins sacred assemblies 4 4 4 4

  11. Parsha 1 May • I'm going to teach today on The portion of the Parsha we read in Luke. But I'm going to start with verse 1 rather then verse 12 so we can understand the context of what's going on here.

  12. Parsha 1 May • 1.One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.

  13. Parsha 1 May • Here we see that Yeshua had come to eat with another leader of the Pharisees. We see Yeshua often sitting with Pharisaical leaders, because He was a Pharisee as well.

  14. Parsha 1 May • Yeshua was royalty, he was a descendant of King David. So of course he'd often move in those circles.

  15. Parsha 1 May • It was also a common thing for Jews to talk about the Scriptures while they ate. • This was part of the culture.

  16. Parsha 1 May • In the first century, when people came to eat, it was a time for Jews to speak of Torah. In the Mishna in Pirkei Avot it says:

  17. Parsha 1 May • “Rabbi Chanina ben (son of) Tradyon said, if two people sit together and do not share words of Torah between them, it is a company of scorners, • But if two people sit and share words of Torah... between them the Divine Presence rests.”

  18. Parsha 1 May • Now some teach that the first century Jews sat at tricliniums. But that's not true. The reason many think they did sit at tricliniums is because that's what the Romans did.

  19. Parsha 1 May • The Jews sat at low round tables with mats going out from the center like spokes on a wheel. That's how they celebrated Pasach as well.

  20. Parsha 1 May • There's quite a few things we can learn concerning the Last Supper simply by understanding the seating arrangements but we'll save that for another time.

  21. Parsha 1 May • It also says here that he was being “carefully watched”. Most assume that he was being watched by this prominent Pharisee, but that is an assumption, we’ll find later that Yeshua had a good disposition towards this man.

  22. Parsha 1 May • 2. There in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy. • Today we would call dropsy "edema“. Edema is a swelling from fluid accumulation in body tissues.

  23. Parsha 1 May • In Biblical days it wasn't well understood. One cause they thought was due to sexual sin another was due to hunger and another for sins such as the golden calf.

  24. Parsha 1 May • one other cause was attributed to withholding ones bowels. Thus the maxim "Much feces, much dropsy". No picture here.

  25. Parsha 1 May • 3. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?" • Christian theologians use this passage to say it is clear proof that the Pharisees believed that one could not heal on the Sabbath!

  26. Parsha 1 May • This is not true, The Mishna says one can heal on the Shabbat "You may break Sabbath on his behalf, that he may be preserved to keep many Sabbaths." Shabbat, Talmud

  27. Parsha 1 May • So why did Yeshua say this? There was a very small sect of Pharisees who had just began to implant the idea that doing miracles on the Sabbath was work. A very small group on the fringes of Pharisaism.

  28. Parsha 1 May • We also have to remember that Yeshua was not the only first century Jew who performed miracles.

  29. Parsha 1 May • There was Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa. Once The son of Johanan ben Zakkai was very sick, the father solicited the prayers of Hanina. Hanina readily complied, and the child recovered.

  30. Parsha 1 May • Similarly, at the solicitation of Gamiliel II (Paul's Rabbi's grandson), Hanina entreated mercy for that patriarch's son.

  31. Parsha 1 May • At the conclusion of his prayers he assured Gamiliel's messengers that the patient's fever had left him and the boy was healed at that moment.

  32. Parsha 1 May • There was also Honi the circle drawer. First century BC, famous for his ability to successfully pray for rain.

  33. Parsha 1 May • On one occasion when God did not send rain well into the winter he drew a circle in the dust, stood inside it, and informed God that he would not move until it rained.

  34. Parsha 1 May • When it began to drizzle, Honi told God that he was not satisfied and expected more rain;

  35. Parsha 1 May • it then began to pour. He explained that he wanted a calm rain, at which point the rain calmed to a normal rain.

  36. Parsha 1 May • These were just 2 miracle workers and there were others. So this very small group of Pharisees, trouble makers, started the idea that because these Rabbis at times received payment for these miracles…

  37. Parsha 1 May • it should be constituted as work. But that was not what the Mishna said and it was NOT Jewish Law!

  38. Parsha 1 May • 4. But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him away. • Yeshua knew he wasn't breaking any laws so he healed the man. Then Yeshua quotes the Mishna in the form of a question...

  39. Parsha 1 May • 5. Then he asked them, "If one of you has a donkey (ass) or an ox that falls into a well (pit) on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull him out?"

  40. Parsha 1 May • Jewish law said you must help an animal in distress even on the Sabbath (Tractate Shabbat Talmud)

  41. Parsha 1 May • Now also in this particular verse we have a textual problem. Some versions say if one of you has a son or an ox that falls into a pit and some other versions say a donkey or an ox.

  42. Parsha 1 May • This is not a translational error. This is a textual error!

  43. Parsha 1 May • There are different texts that are used in the making of the New Testament like the Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus. One says "son" and the other says "ass".

  44. Parsha 1 May • If you don't believe the original New Testament was written in Hebrew, then I'll leave it to you to decide which of these two texts is the Word Of God.

  45. Parsha 1 May • Because one says “son” and the other says “ass” and they can't both be right though they are both used in making the New Testament.

  46. Parsha 1 May • 6. And they had nothing to say. • They had nothing to say because there was a lot more going on with His words then meets the eye. Yeshua was also attacking the Essenes here.

  47. Parsha 1 May • The Essenes taught that you could not help any animal out of a pit during the Shabbat. We know this from the “Damascus Document”...

  48. Parsha 1 May • Dead Sea Scrolls, Damascus Covenant 11.13-14 • 13 No man shall help a beast give birth on the Sabbath day; and if it falls in a pit • 14 or a hollow, he shall not lift it out on the Sabbath.

  49. Parsha 1 May • This was a theological issue at that time. It wasn't a practical issue, the odds are against it even happening in the first place.
