  1. Monday, March 31, 2014AIM: What is the Multiplication Counting Principle? • DO NOW: Kimberly has three pair of pants: one black, one red, and one tan. She also has four shirts: one pink, one white, one yellow, and one green. • Draw a tree diagram or list the sample space showing all possible outfits that she could wear, if an outfit consists of one pair of pants and one shirt. • How many different outfits can Kimberly wear?

  2. Kimberly has three pair of pants: one black, one red, and one tan. She also has four shirts: one pink, one white, one yellow, and one green.Howmany different outfits can Kimberly wear?

  3. What is a Sample Space? A sample space is a set of all possible outcomes for an activity or experiment. Example: Rolling a die Example: Choosing an outfit from a red blouse, a grey blouse, a black skirt, a pair of sandals, and a pair of sneakers

  4. The Counting Principle With the occurrence of more than one event or activity, the counting principle can be used to quickly determine how many possible outcomes exist Example: If ice cream sundaes come in 5 flavors with 4 possible toppings, how many different sundaes can be made with one flavor of ice cream and one topping? *HINT: Rather than list the entire sample space with all possible combinations of ice cream and toppings, we may simply multiply:  5 • 4 = 20 possible sundaes

  5. Notes:Vocabulary: The Counting Principle Copy  The Fundamental Counting Principle:  If there are  a ways for one activity to occur, and b ways for a second activity to occur, then there are a • b ways for both to occur.

  6. Notes: Example A movie theater sells 3 sizes of popcorn (small, medium, and large) with 3 choices of toppings (no butter, butter, extra butter).  How many possible ways can a bag of popcorn be purchased?

  7. Notes: Let’s Try Another! The ice cream shop offers 31 flavors.  You order a double-scoop cone.  In how many different ways can the clerk put the ice cream on the cone if you wanted two different flavors?

  8. You Try! 1) Heather has finally narrowed her clothing choices for the big party down to 3 skirts, 2 tops and 4 pair of shoes.  How many different outfits could she form from these choices? 2) Burger Queen offers 4 types of burgers, 5 types of beverages, and 3 types of desserts.  If a meal consists of 1 burger, one beverage and one dessert, how many possible meals can be chosen?
