Contemporary Sociology of RomeLecture 1: Overview Debra Friedman Michael Hechter August 23, 2004
Sociology • Fundamentally two questions in sociology: • What is the basis of social order? • How does social change occur?
Social order • What is the individual’s relationship to the collective? How can a collection of individuals manage to live together? • Groups to which individuals belong Homogeneous/heterogeneous? Values and norms which govern individual action Similar/different?
The problem of social order At its root, the problem of order concerns the means by which the demands of the group and those of the individual are reconciled. The more that individual behavior is collectively oriented, the higher the level of order.
Determinants of social order • Many interesting problems associated with trying to understand social order. • Immigration • Social class • Region • These are three sources of potential heterogeneity in complex societies.
Institutions and social order • Because of individualism, first of all, and heterogeneity, second of all, institutions arise to promote social order in every society: • Family • State • Schools • Church
Threats to social order Still, every society continuously deals with threats to social order • Crime • Insurrection • Family instability (e.g., divorce)
