What Can We Do About It? • Incorporate support for ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION in the FEDERAL HIGHWAY BILL • The MOVING AHEAD FOR PROGRESS IN THE 21ST CENTURY ACT or MAP – 21 reduces the total funding for “transportation alternatives” and leaves out important ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION language from the Senate version • Strong COMPLETE STREETS language would create a federal requirement to accommodate ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION in federal highway aid projects • COMPLETE THE MAP-21!

  8. What are Complete Streets? • Accommodates all users safely including • Pedestrians • Bicyclists • Motorists • Transit riders • Children • Seniors • Disabled persons • Elements include sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, bus lanes, curb extensions and more. • Over 200 local policies!

  9. What are the Benefits of Complete Streets? • Gets people physically active and healthy • Provides people with accessible, low cost transportation options • Reduces the risk of injury to bicyclists and pedestrians • Protects vulnerable road users • Improved air quality • Good for communities

Policy Language Each State and metropolitan planning organization shall have in effect— a law or explicit statement of policy requiring that all transportation projects in the state or under the jurisdiction of the metropolitan planning organization using federal highway aid funds shall accommodate the safety and convenience of all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, motorists and freight vehicle operators, in accordance with complete streets principles.
